Vick unsure about next week, says refs allowing late hits

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is uncertain whether he’ll be able to play next weekend against the 49ers, after breaking his right (non-throwing) hand during Sunday’s 29-16 loss to the Giants.

Vick also thinks he is being hit late every week by opponents, but that referees are not calling penalties when they are warranted. Vick was injured when he was hit by defensive tackle Chris Canty after completing a pass to Jeremy Maclin in the third quarter. Vick, who suffered a concussion last week, thought Canty’s hit should have been a penalty.

“I felt like I got hit late—there’s no flag, broke my hand,” Vick said. “I was trying to protect myself. Didn’t get a flag. That’s pretty much been the story the last three weeks. Obviously at some point, something catastrophic is going to happen.

“I just think more protection should be taken when I’m inside the pocket. You look at all the replays … I’m on the ground every time. I’d be lying if I sat here and said I wasn’t frustrated right now.”

Asked if he felt he was not getting calls that other quarterbacks get, Vick said, “Absolutely. The refs got to do their jobs as well.”

I don’t know if I’m going to be able to play next week. I don’t know anything right now except my hand is broken. We’ve got to figure out the next move.”

In his column on FOXSports.com, former NFL vice president of officiating Mike Pereira took exception to Vick's critical remarks about the league's officials.

"Doesn’t get the flags like everybody else? That’s bull," Pereira wrote. "The rules are no different for Michael Vick than they are for anybody else. These complaints are not new. Vick—and the Eagles—have complained ever since he returned to the NFL in 2009.

"He is a talented scrambling quarterback. In fact, there isn’t another quarterback like him. He’s constantly on the move and he is going to end up on the ground sometimes. But just because he’s on the ground, it does not mean he was hit late.

"The officials have a tough enough job as it is, being second-guessed all the time. The last thing they need is unwarranted criticism."

I am certainly not a Vick fan, but he actually has a valid point.  At least two of the hits should have been flagged and if it were Brady or Manning they would have been.

Eh,It's the refs missing calls not just a player not getting calls....in the same game a Dlineman should have had a 15 yard penalty for grabbing Eli's face mask, and last Sunday a Eagles lineman blasted Matt Ryan in the face, helmet to helmet and it wasn't called.

Funny, they don't "miss calls" like that with Brady and Peyton....  I don't buy it.   On occasion, sure, but the whole helmet to helmet thing isn't exactly hard to spot, regardless of the angle.

Too bad he didn't turn Eli's helmet all the way around with his precious little noggin' still in it....  Grin

Agree with the Stopper on this one. Vick is never going to get the calls that the leagues golden boys are going to get.

It's just the way it is... Vick is the black workhorse and he may as well get used to that fact.

LOL tu,

vick gets treated the same way that 99% of the rest of the qb's get treated. Yea you have brady and manning but EVERY OTHER QB gets the same treatment vick gets.

you hear anybody else bitching?

the reason he doesnt get treated like a golden boy is b/c he isnt a golden boy

vick doesnt get treated any different than every other qb outside of peyton and brady, JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE

But how does that make it "ok?"  If they are going to bother putting all these rules in place, they should call them evenly across the board.  Just because Vick spoke up about it doesn't mean others don't feel the exact same way.

If anything if I was a defensive player and got a free late shot at Brady or Manning I would light them up and try to put them out of the game.  They are going to call a penalty anyway, so just get your moneys worth.  Grin

He should be used to this type of beating, from his days in Atlanta, when the BUCS would drill him into the ground.

I don't think that's true... I think Palmer, Ryan, Sanchez, Rivers, Roethlisburger, and probably a couple of more are on a different plane when it comes to getting flags than Vick as well.

I never said it made it ok, my point is Vick whining about getting treated different...he gets treated the way the majority of qb's get treated. No its not right and ive said it time and time again but im ok with it now that i have brady on my fantasy team Wink

and I agree with you even in vicks case especially if I caught him outside the pocket. Id take a late hit penalty or unecessary roughness penalty to knock that guy out of the game.

I think the facts disagree with you, I was watching the pregames this weekend and dilfer said that he out of all qb's playing right now has the most late hit calls etc...

I dont know if its true or not but he said it like it was a fact.

I also disagree with your assesment that hit on sunday wasnt late, he lead with the head but Vick was complaining about late hits more than anything and that hit wasnt late.

We can disagree, but I do tend to agree with Vick... mostly because if you're a quarterback in the NFL, then you should be treated like a quarterback in the NFL.

None of this special treatment for the goldenboys.

agreed, but vick going on tv and saying that he "doesnt understand why he doesnt get the calls the other guys get" is ridiculous...99% of the other guys dont get those calls.

if dilfer is right then he gets more calls than ANYONE!!!

so he may have a valid point but not him specifically, he should frame the argument like we all have here. The majority of qb's dont get the calls brady and manning does, not that he specifically gets singled out and doesnt get calls b/c thats not the facts.

Perhaps, but when you're out there getting hit, and you're in the heat of the moment, I'm sure that you feel that it's "you".

agreed, i think it was more from the frustration of the way his offense was going rather than the fact he should have gotten a flag.

He threw dogs down a lot harder than defensive linemen have done to him.  Even Chinese restaurant owners hate his black ass.

I agree with Stopper too.  They don't miss anything on Manning or Brady...

But I don't feel sorry for Vick Grin
