It is one of the toughest nine-kilometre races in any sport, a leg-destroying climb up an alpine ski run at Val di Fiemme, Italy, on cross-country skis to close out the gruelling, nine-stage Tour de Ski.
Your legs are screaming at you for a rest, howling as loud as the 30,000 rabid fans lining the slope Tour de France-style, many of them running in short bursts up the hill urging you on.
And then there’s the mental battle of a pursuit race, trying desperately to catch guys in front of you while stressing out about who might be coming up from behind.
“It’s a pretty surreal scene,” said Devon Kershaw, whose 18th fastest time of 31 minutes, 46.8 seconds on Sunday was still good enough to allow him to hold on for a fourth overall finish, the best ever by a Canadian in one of cross-country skiing’s signature events.
“It’s just a really, really gruelling race,” Kershaw said of the final stage. “It hurts so much. Your legs are just screaming at you. And for your mind, it’s so stressful. The crowd is so loud, you can’t hear any information [on where you stand].”
Kershaw said he new early into the steepest part of the climb that it probably wasn’t going to be his day.
“You’re dealing with the fact you’re probably not going to be on the [overall] podium. You’re still trying to attack, but I’m also so terrified that people are going to come from behind and pass me.”
In the end, the 29-year-old from Sudbury, Ont., hung on for fourth, a three-place improvement on his 2011 finish.
And there was certainly no shame in finishing fourth given the pedigree of the guys who earned the podium spots. For winner Dario Cologna of Switzerland, it was his third Tour de Ski title, while silver medalist Marcus Hellner of Sweden and bronze medalist Petter Northug of Norway are multiple Olympic and world championship gold medalists.
