I'm just speculating on one possible cause of the violence.  This thing was peacefull all day.
It's a fact that a right winger (Patrck Howley) infiltrated another 99% protest in DC with the intent of creating a violent response. 

Then again, this is Oakland so it could just as easily have been local a-holes who were just looking for an excuse to do some vandalizing

We know for a fact that right wingers like to infiltrate peaceful demonstrations and cause violence (for example the peaceful protest at the air and space museum in DC) and I would not be suprised at all if there was some element of that in Oakland a few days ago

I'm not aware of any TeaBagger events getting violent but then most of the participants were so morbidly obese that it seemed they couldn't even stand up very long
