The first three Queen albums (I, II, Sheer Heart Attack) were some of the best hard rock albums put out in the early 70s. They produced some good/great albums right up to Jazz. There after, the slide downwards began. Still and all, the fuckers could rock live and I guarantee they'd blow away ANY band in this day and age. I had a friend who was into bands like Killing Joke and the like, back in the day. Well, he won a couple of tickets to see Queen in concert and debated whether or not to go. He finally ended up going. I asked him what he thought of them live, as he'd seen tons of bands and we were pretty much on the same wavelength musically. He said that they flat out floored him. Enough said.

Interestingly they were an oddity in that all band members were equally good song writers, which I think kind of affected the cohesiveness of albums later on in their career.
And yes, Mercury was as camp as a row of tents.
