I was a  hefty kid growing up. Big frame, broad shoulders, but overweight. Had been practising martial arts since I was 8 years old and was strong and flexible, but still soft around the middle. I went away to uni, found the gym, and discovered it was the best way for me to keep the fat off.

Met S. Reeves who encouraged me to lift weights during my early teens and was super impressed by his courtesy when he showed up at American Health Studios to offer more encouragement about four years later.

Back then the term "bodybuilding" was a foreign concept and contests were a rarity and those who supported the 'sport' were family members and training partners.

If there were five competitors and 20 people in the audience, the event was considered a big success. And the contests were always held on a basketball court.

And never a sanction fee nor an entry fee.

"Trophies" were mainly medals with a red, white, and blue ribbon 'chain'.

When I was younger I LOVED the Arnold/Stallone/JCVD type films - big, lean guys using their superior physiques to basically save the world. Rocky, Conan The Barbarian, Street Fighter, Terminator et cetera really got me pumped and I always wished I could be like those guys. They were truly my heroes when I was a tubby little 8-year old boy.

I never thought I could be like them, though, I thought they were super human, out of my reach. I gave up on the idea of ever having a good physique, and I continued gaining weight, ending up at 220 lbs of pure fat, 5'10" - 5'11" ish. Really felt like shit, and very far removed from the guys I admired when I was younger. One day I decided it was enough and over the course of a year or so I dropped down to 155 lbs, 6 foot.

Joined a gym, started lifting and 2 years later, here we are. In love with looking good, equipped with my bible and ready to look like my hero Arnold. Bodybuilding changed my life. :)

Did you buy a new laptop or simply replaced the spacebar?

OR

Just forgot to actually include a period in between each word?

How right you two are.

To hear Reeves own speaking voice I recommend the light musical from 1954 "Athena".

Being deaf in one ear really made life hard for me, but I was lucky to have a supportive policeman father growing up in New Jersey.

I found solice in the colour green. I was green with envy, I needed cash, and it found me fame as an adult that I could never dream of. The opportunity for people to watch me angry.

But these days my former competitors are doing better than me now (probably because I didn't listen to their advice during my contests properly but who am I kidding, I can't listen too good anyway), so I make a living charging kids for autographs.

As an infant, Lou suffered an ear infection and lost some of his hearing which resulted in him having something of a speech impediment. Ferrigno sees his loss of hearing as influential towards bodybuilding and his life: "...if I hadn't lost some of my hearing, I wouldn't be where I am now. It forced me to maximize my own potential. I had to be better than the average person to succeed.

Ferrigno appeared as himself in the 2009 feature film comedy I Love You, Man.

Ferrigno had trained Michael Jackson on and off since the early 1990s, and in 2009, he had been helping Jackson get into shape for a planned series of concerts in London.

Ferrigno took part in a Smosh video, titled "I love Lou Ferrigno", in which he is tracked down by one of Smosh's members, Anthony, in Hollywood. The skit ends with Ferrigno knocking Anthony unconscious, in response to Ian's claim that Anthony stole Ferrigno's Butterfinger.

In February 2006, Ferrigno was sworn in as a Los Angeles County, California reserve sheriff's deputy.

Ferrigno sells his own line of fitness equipment through his company, Ferrigno Fitness. In a January 2009 taping, Ferrigno Fitness provided equipment to The Price Is Right, hosted by Drew Carey for use as a One Bid prize, and demonstrated the equipment himself.

In 2010, Ferrigno appeared in "My Two Chads", an episode of Sonny with a Chance, appearing as himself in an episode of the fictional series MacKenzie Falls.

In November 2010, Ferrigno was sworn in as a member of a Maricopa County, Arizona volunteer sheriff posse, which also includes actors Steven Seagal and Peter Lupus, in order to help control illegal immigration in the Phoenix Valley area.

While the Hulk will be physically played by Mark Ruffalo in the 2012 The Avengers movie, Ferrigno will perform the voice of the character.

Seems like he's keeping busy.
