It is true that Kubrick was very difficult to work with. According to R. Lee Ermey, the infamous Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket, Kubrick had a scene where the recruits would piss into a urinal and Private Pyle was to clean it with his own toothbrush.....and then brush his teeth. Kubrick's version was more hardcore than what we were seen and was greatly toned down at the behest of Ermey. However, some of the scenes did make it in spite of Ermey's protestations.....the punching of Pvt. Joker in the solar plexus and the ultimate killing of Hartman and subsequent suicide of Pvt. Pyle.
