I watched the movie in it's entirety recently on DVD. This scene makes no sense to me and, unfortunately, there hasn't really been any commentary on it.  Apparently, one of the guests who died in the hotel was a furry???

If you ever have some time to kill, this guy hear talks about how heavily Kubrick was in with the Occult/Heirachy. I believe what is going on in this scene is Kubrick telling the "conscious" viewer about the Illuminati and their occult ties. All of Kubricks movies are tied together. This scene here in the Shining and Kubrick last film "Eyes Wide Shut" come together.

king "hated" the movie because it was different than his book and surpassed his book

kubrick took king's idea and made it much better

there is no other logical explanation for an obvious horror fan to "hate" that movie

E

King is deeply into the Occult. And he knew that Kubrick took his book and was telling more than one story with the Shining. As he did with all his movies. King saying he hated the Shining movie was King telling the Hierarchy that he doesn't agree with Kubrick telling "their" secrets.

If you read the book, it mentions that the hotel hosted lots of parties, including costume parties, so I just took it to mean that.

Interesting observation:

"It has been pointed out that there's a mirror in every scene in which Jack sees a ghost, causing us to wonder whether the spirits are reflections of a tortured psyche."

Royalty's Opinion: the Ghosts are not reflections of Jack... The ghosts are real. A real ghost had to unlock the door in the kitchen to free Jack Torrence. Leading up to that point; Wendy hit Jack with a bat, causing him to fall down the stairs. She then dragged him to the kitchen and locked him in that huge pantry. Locks dont unlock themselves! Sombody had to unlock him. I believe Delbert Grady unlocked Jack. It sure as hell was not Wendy or Danny!!

Kubrick was deep in to the Occult. And partied with the hierarchy. However, he was never truly one of them. He didn't have the bloodline. The Hierarchy used him as a tool(fake moon landing etc). Kubrick is telling the viewers that the Occult/Hierarchy fooled him into thinking he would be one of them. And when he found out that he could never be part of the club, the Hierarchy laughed at him. Hence, hot chick turning into the hag.

Not quite. Kubrick was definitely somebody in the know at one point or another.

Alex Jones has an entire section of his message board dedicated to Kubrick's films. Stanley was way ahead of his time.

It still boggles the mind that 2001 was made in the mid to late 60's.

I didn't come up with the theory bro. Many people have studied Kubrick and come to the conclusion that he knew way too much about things most people couldn't even fathom. 2001 made in the 1960's really shouldn't have existed back then.

Kubrick was ahead of his time and had the talent and means to carve his wisdom into entertainment history.

Not true. But he was an exceptional director who realized his vision(s) very convincingly.

It is well known that Kubrick was warning us all with his portrayal of the computer in 2001:  A Space Odyssey, by naming the computer "HAL".
Each letter is exactly one letter away from IBM.
