This has always torn at the world's fabric. Only thing we can hope for is that it will somehow play out in a medium violent way.

I don't think it was a cloud because the moon appeared huge, and what was blocking it out was so perfectly dark and rounded.  Just like this in about 15-30 seconds:

Like I said...condensed water vapor at a high altitude...a cloud...Look in the weather archives that day and time and see what the conditions were very high in the atmosphere.

Lunar eclipses take several hours to go through to totality and back...Unless there are "circumstances" that distorted your sense of time...
