I bet that little dude also whistles at chicks while he's sitting on his lunch break next to his bulldozer smoking a cigarette and drinking a beer.

This. My parents had 9 acres taken from them about 6 years ago for a road widening project that has yet to happen, and may not now. City can take what they want if they deem it for the better good.
I'm sure they had to compensate them right?

1. What is the power of eminent domain or condemnation?

Eminent domain is the power of a government to acquire private property for public purposes by way of a court proceeding when they are unable to reach an agreement with the owner of property to buy the property. “Condemnation” usually refers to the legal proceeding in which the power of eminent domain is exercised. Often the two terms are used interchangeably. The U.S. Government, the government of the State of Tennessee, and most municipalities and other governmental entities have the power of eminent domain.

2. What is the theory behind eminent domain?

The theory behind eminent domain is that all private ownership of property comes originally from the government and when the government allows private ownership of property, it reserves the right to take property back when necessary for the public good upon payment of “just compensation.”

Quote
Many countries recognize eminent domain to a much lesser extent than the English-speaking world or do not recognize it at all. Japan, for instance, has very weak eminent domain powers, as evidenced by the high-profile opposition to the expansion of Narita International Airport, and the disproportionately large amounts of financial inducement given to residents on sites slated for redevelopment in return for their agreement to leave, one well-known recent case being that of Roppongi Hills.

There are other countries such as the People's Republic of China that practice eminent domain whenever it is convenient to make space for new communities and government structures. Singapore practices eminent domain under the Land Acquisitions Act which allows it to carry out its Selective En bloc Redevelopment Scheme for urban renewal. The Amendments to the Land Titles Act allowed property to be purchased for purposes of urban renewal against an owner sharing a collective title if the majority of the other owners wishes to sell and the minority did not. Thus, eminent domain often invokes concerns of majoritarianism.

NOT LEAVING! Chinese couple refuses to move despite apartment building that lies in middle of new roadway

New private ownership laws give the couple the right to stay put unless they feel they’ve been compensated enough to move – and they don’t.

That couple should open a drive-through snack shop and become rich.

At the time, it was zoned residential. The city would not let them rezone it. They wanted to put a gas station there and a strip mall. The city said no, that it could only be farmed or houses put there because they wanted to keep the integrity of the "rural" area when right across the street was a brand new Harris teeter, target, Walmart and a shit load of other places. Funny, then a year later the city forced them to sell to put a road through for a school and future road widening that six years later has still yet to be done.
Something very similar happened to my Dad's aunt and uncle. It is really fucked up.

i dont see this move by china as being about more freedom. it looks to be a less direct and more alienating form of coercion.

what i mean to say is why the fuck did the government have to build the highway in such a manner so that the house would be right in the smack dab middle of it? that couldnnt put a small curve right there, used a couple hundred extra square feet of asphalt, and put the house on the side of the freeway instead of right in the fucking middle?   it seems obvious to me that they could have done that and not put the homeowners in such a fucking shitty situation.. thats just totally uncalled for.

i guess in a sense this move is less authoritarian than what our own government would do. but it seems much more vindictive.

Hater.

It's ok to hate things.  It's natural.  Liberating.  Probably healthy.  Go ahead and hate something today.

Since it's China, it is only a matter of time before a truck crashes into the house and demolishes it, killing a few pedestrians along the way.

Best post in the thread, driving in China is fucking deadly
