Actually regardless wether he is the son of God or not he is the most influential and popular being to ever walk the planet. No one even comes close and his death was the pinnacle of mankind, single most influential death of all time that even our modern global calender is based on him. The biggest holidays are also based on him. Nothing can change this no matter who comes next, will not make a difference, it's to late for anyone else to surpass his legacy. |

In reading the synoptic gospels he was either born on jan 4th or the 6th. The reason for the Christian celebration on dec 25 was to mask the day within the roman calendar (end of the festival of Mithra if I remember correctly).
Jesus was just a man. He's inspired a lot of good but also a lot of evil.

The date is obviously just symbolic because it was same as many of the birthdays of the ancient pagan gods and people traditionally celebrated on 25 December.
So it makes sense that the Romans would have held the celebration on the same date really. Also, as a way to try add legitimicy and to get more followers to the Emperor Constantine's favoured religion. He was still a followed of Sol Invictus (The Unconquered Sun) till his death bed when he was finally baptised.
