This is the most outstanding document (along with the Declaration of Independence) and the most important contribution of Western thought given to humanity in the last 300 years.

It tells you that you are supreme...that you're not a slave.

We arm ourselves because "eternal vigilance is the price of freedom" - Thomas Jeffereson.  Americans have an innate understanding that institutionalized power breeds corruption and tyranny.  Of course its not expected that a Brit, who's endured 1000 years of politcal/church/royal control, would understand the charge of maintaining freedom.

Americans want to be able to have assault weapons because they know their freedom could be endangered by anyone on earth at any given time, wether it's their own government...or a chinese invasion and so on. Basically it's a deeply embeded warrior spirit. When you build stuff, you develop the will to defend it, at all costs. It's normal to be conservative, when you actually built, developped stuff.
