Every human being that ever lived has been flawed in some way. What's absurd about having a 'favorite' philosopher on the basis of their work, personal flaws aside?

Can't I have a favorite actor, whatever freakish Hollywood bullshit they have going on off the screen?

I wasn't referring to their personalities as being flawed, but their work.

“This sunny day reminds me of one day 47 years ago, when I hopped in my GTO and headed for the Muscle Beach Dungeon. The ride was tight, fast and mean, the sun blazed across my windshield and the Pacific sparkled like diamonds at my nine. This was paradise and I didn’t know it.”

Someone's been watching Dan Dennett ted videos  :D

Don't worry, despite my appropriating the joke, it is indeed true: I grew attached to a rarified sub-topic in metaphysics, itself a rarified branch of analytic philosophy. Substantive conversation is nigh impossible with the uninformed and still difficult among experts from other wings of the field.

I wasn't referring to their personalities as being flawed, but their work.

Oh, ok. To me, 'hopeless romanticism' sounded more like a personality flaw rather than anything to do with Russell's Theory of Descriptions or some such (i.e., any actual philosophical work).

Nitpicking about the examples your provided aside, I think you're absolutely right that all the big names in philosophy have their limitations or outright follies, insights notwithstanding. But I still don't think there's anything inherently "absurd" in picking a favorite philosopher on the basis of their having more insights than others, or perhaps having an insight that is central to one's belief system, like a crown jewel (or, central to a specific sub-portion of one's belief system).

lol @ e-kul quoting nietzsche as if he's his "favorite philosopher" when clearly, he's never read more than a couple quotes here and there, as the rest is completely irreconcilable with 'kul's blabbering.

my favorite quote is

"to a god all things are fair and good and just, but people hold some things wrong and some right."

E. M. Cioran, his aphorisms are just great.

“Suffering makes you live time in detail, moment after moment. Which is to say that it exists for you: over the others, the ones who don't suffer, time flows, so that they don't live in time, in fact they never have.”

“In most cases we attach ourselves to God in order to take revenge on life, to punish it, to signify we can do without it, that we have found something better, and we also attach ourselves to God in horror of men."

Aphorisms are not that difficult to write, IMO.

Its more the fear of reading Kant than actually understanding it that drives people not to read him, imo.

Many people have, as for understanding him ... :)

I have a theory that Nietzsche attacks on Kant's systems had as much to do with his convoluted, incredibly abstruse style as with anything else.
