Game theory explains why pro bodybuilders are sheep.
« on: June 26, 2013, 07:36:22 AM »
Lee Priest hasn't competed in the IFBB for many years now. We witnessed how that self-appointed pro athletes rep Bob Chick did absolutely nothing to help Lee get reinstated. Nope, the IFBB booted Lee out for good. Nasty people in the backroom making these decisions. Pro bodybuilders should be able to earn income wherever they like. Not so, says the IFBB. Sign here or else see you later.

Lee insists that the bodybuilders have the power to change things if they stick together. He is 100% right about that. What have we seen? The two guys who spoke out got the boot. They got rid of Lee and Milos. So how come the bodybuilders don't stick together and vote to make changes beneficial to everyone? To find the answer we have to take a look at game theory.

Why doesn't everyone see the sense that Lee is talking about and take a united stand? They have told Lee they agree with him but not a single guy has supported Lee at the meetings. Are these huge musclemen cowards? Let us assume they are hardly that. So other factors must be operating that makes them keep quiet.

What game theory tells us is that in a situation where an individual benefits by being selfish he will do the selfish thing and not cooperate with others. In a meeting Lee speaks out and gets the boot. No one else says a word. All those who do not speak out benefit because with Lee gone everyone moves up a notch in his absence. It doesn't pay in bodybuilding to speak out and risk getting suspended. So musclemen have become sheep because they benefit by doing so. All the officials have to do is sacrifice one bodybuilder and make his punishment so severe that no one will dare risk getting the same punishment.

There you have it.

This isn't really a good example of game theory.   As an aside, when they tested game theory it turned out people didnt act in the way expected and were likely to sacrifice in exchange for an mutually equitable outcome.

Also regarding game theory; IFBB never lost much since Priest has always been vastly overrated.

In the army deserters are shot. That stops guys trying to run away. I mean, it doesn't make sense to stay when you might get killed. So the IFBB employs a similar threat. Stray and you are gone.

A classic example of game theory used in evolutionary theory explains why trees are tall. Instead of needing all those resources to get tall it would pay all trees to be much smaller. If they cooperated and shared resources they wouldn't need to be tall. However, individual trees that were selfish and did their own thing grew taller. Thus, eventually only the tall trees had offspring and there you are. It pays to be selfish, especially over a long period of time.

Suppose you have 10 close mates and you go to this room that has 11 sound proof cubicles. Each person goes in a cubicle and closes the door. In front of each person are two buttons. One is Red and the other button is Green. A sign reads: You have 1 minute to decide and you can't communicate with anyone else. These are your choices. 1. press the Red button and you instantly get $10,000. 2. If everyone presses the Green button then everyone will get $100,000 each. However, if one person presses a Red button the others get nothing and the person who pressed the Red button gets $10,000. The question is, what button do you press and how does it take you make your decision?
