The entry costs are quite outrageous... membership to the NPC is what, $200/year?  And the entry fee to a show is gonna be at least $100.  Since most don't pay cash prizes, I'm not sure where the money goes?

Therin lies the rub.

People ALWAYS compromise form by going too heavy.
As long as you dont see squats as a leg excercise you should be fine.
Your legs can lift way more than your lower back can handle.
