He was a member of the Illuminati? Sheesh, they'll accept anyone these days it seems. They must need more income and having more dues-paying members is a good way to achieve that without raising dues for existing members.

Perhaps the funds are needed to help finish the much delayed and over-budget Project Lightbulb. Maybe they want to replace the incandescent bulbs in the design with LEDs so that it's not out-of-date before it gets into service and they can get some use out of it after all.
