Good Riddance to Filibuster
« on: November 22, 2013, 02:13:08 PM »
Although the Democrats should not gloat, because they were against getting rid of the filibuster when the Republicans were in control a few years ago, we are all better off without the filibuster.  What government can run smoothly requiring a 60 percent vote for day-to-day matters and appointments?  And don't let anybody tell you that the founders put the filibuster in the Constitution.  The only things I believe require a 60 percent or more vote in the Constitution are treaties, Supreme Court justices, maybe cabinet officers (although I am not sure of that one), and, of course, changing the Constitution itself.  This will be twisted around on some of the news media tonight, but - believe me - we are all better off after this change.

The democrats were afraid the Republicans would do this to them when they were the majority. There is plenty of video of how Democrats including Reid said it would be wrong. The Republicans never did it. Understand what they are talking about is blocking the appointment of judges. Democrats want to stack the deck.  The joke will be on them if the Republicans ever gain back control. Then they will say it's unfair again that the Republican majority have so much power. I'm willing to bet the Republicans will repeal their grab for power ruling when they are back in power showing that's it's the wrong thing to do no matter who is in charge.

On a separate but related topic the economy went to hell under Bush when both the House and Senate in his last couple of  years went Democratic. The Democrats were in charge of spending and in charge of the banks.

I don't care about he said/she said.  My point is simply that the filibuster is dysfunctional no matter who has control.  But certain media will twist this all around and show historical videos and do a big crybaby thing over this

Democrats must have a lot of faith that they will have a permanent majority soon.

Or maybe they just believe that elections rightly have consequences.

If the right becomes the majority, then God bless 'em and they get to make a lot of decisions and appointments.

Until then, though, the dems are in control and with all the long-term judicial vacancies (92 vacancies on federal district and aplellate courts) due to overuse of the now-defunct filibuster, there are going to be some new sheriffs judges in town.

Long overdue, imo.

Reid knew that the Senate has changed and if the Repubs get back in control they would have done this anyway so the Dem were smart to do this now.

BTW - Repubs werent just filibustering judicial nominees, they also fillibustered Obama pick for Sec of Defence Chuck Hagel     something that had never been done before.  Also, Repubs claim to be fillibustering Obama's appointments to the DC Circuit by claiming they don't have the case load to support it    I suspect that excuse would suddenly vanish if we has a Republican POTUS

It's really irresponsible to leave such a large number of positions vacant for so long.  Speaks to an unwillingness to have the government function smoothly (also seen during the shutdown).  Republicans brought this down themselves by being so intransigent.

Obama has been the most divisive president ever. Half of this country are rabid supporters and believe all the liberal bias the main stream media feeds them.  The democrats are ruining this country. This started when the Senate and House went Democratic under Bush. It was then they got control of spending and the banks. I have never seen such manipulation of the people. They changed the way the GDP is mathematically figured so it's looks like it's improving. I think this got a one day blip on most news providers and then was buried. You could make a very long list of how Obama's administration is ruining this country but his strongest base is his super liberal young people who believes in this guy that won't see the evidence in front of their face.

Might also have something to do with how many times repubs used the filibuster, too, eh?

A system that hadn't been abused until recent years, don't forget to add.

Primarily by being black.  Some folks have an awfully hard time getting past that.

If I am reading the chart above correctly, the reason it "worked for 200 years", is that it was HARDLY EVER USED up until about 1966.  Thereafter it has been abused by BOTH PARTIES, with the crescendo of abuse during the last several years by Republicans in the Senate during Obama's presidency.  It has caused a breakdown in day-to-day administration of government matters (e.g., middle level judges and beauracrats not getting placed into their administrative positions with an excessive amount of crybaby harping in front of television cameras during congressional committees).  The founders certainly never envisioned this and they did not spell its use out in the Constitution other than for high matters of state (Advise and Consent).  It got glamorized in certain Hollywood movies (Jimmy Stewart going to Washington and the movie Advise and Consent which was about a Secretary of State nominee who lacked personal integrity) so I guess some see it as part of our inherited canon, but I don't see it that way at all.  I guess we have waited for a "divisive" president (a Predident who by the way got almost 55 percent of the popular vote a year ago and who did extremely well among the most educated demographic) to get rid of something that has not worked as intended for the last 50 years or so.

So thru the years, for example when Clinton was in office, somehow this didnt happen as often, yet it just cant be because of the current president?   Its stunning what a free pass you guys give this clown. It is ALWAYS somebody elses fault, he didnt know, mis-spoke, etc...  Oh well, all that is being done is firing up the repub base and pissing off enough swing voters.  Keep it up.

LOLOL

The GOP has fillibustered Obama nearly as much as all the filibusters in the countries history, it's hilarious. They have something lke 86 and the previous number in the history of the states in 88 (approx). Pretty funny that you accept this abuse going on and someone chalk it up to partisan attacks.

If this fires up the Republican base and swing voters, so be it.  That is what democracy is all about.  We need a strong two party system, and the last thing we need is for the GOP to self-destruct giving us a multi-party scenario like in Europe.  It all depends on which candidates will be selected in the primaries.  Lately Republicans have been picking a lot of candidates who are unable to get the swing voters, e.g., Cucinelli in Virginia.  If we do go Republican in 2014 and 2016, the one thing I hope is that Obamacare will be too deeply entrenched to be realistically dismantled (e.g., allowing insurers to revert to pre-existing denials, etc). And, of course, the generalized filibuster should remain in the dustbin of history.
