Dihydro-testosterone, and a genetic sensitivity to it. It also makes prostates occlude urinary tracts. Finasteride blocks its formation.

From an evolutionary standpoint, it's probably akin to the "silverbacking" you see in gorillas--an easy way to recognize the senior males in a society.

Most men will have good enough hair until 35, and after that who cares? Focus on your career & family instead of your appearance
