the "weird shape"  is called musclemass ;)
If you had some mass on your legs they would look somewhat like his to =)
God forbid!

There is NOTHING better than squats (free) for building mass. Are you kidding??

Quads and glutes. For every inch i gain in my quads i put 2-3 around my glutes.

Simple Simon explained it the best. I agree 100% .. squats are FAR from the best exercise. The best exercise to isolate all the vastus is leg extensions done unulaterally. Try it. It ain't powerlifting, it's a smart man's game ..not a strong man's game

Why would you want to isolate if you can train them all at once?

Squats are very good for building quadriceps mass, BUT there is a point in Simple Simons reasoning.
It all comes down to biomechanics.
If you have short femurs, relatively long torso, you will squat quad dominant and yes squatting will be one of the best exercises for legs.
However, if you have a short torso, long legs, you will be a glute dominant lifter. Your lower back and glutes will do most of the work while doing squats. For these people there are better exercises than squats to build the legs (purely from a bb standpoint).

The quadriceps straightens the leg and the leg bicep bends it.
So for full development the muscle has to contract and expand under pressure, a leg extension does this, the muscle has no idea what exercise you are doing it only knows stress.

Squats are not the best exercise for stressing the legs and inducing muscle growth.

Think about it, how much weight can you push in a leg press compared to a squat?
What lets you down on the squat?
Its the low back, you can only squat as much as your lower back can take, not the legs.

Take the low back out of the equation and you can increase stress on the quads and hams.

That is all.

what about hacks?

Why would one take a picture like that, other than to demonstrate the muscle wasting that goes hand in hand with aids?

Great. All we need to do now is start a concentration camp "don" thread.

I have tried everything and my genetics for lower half are stellar from a bb standpoint. I was patient enough to try over a length of time throughout 25 years in the gym everything under the sun. No need to squat. If you want to, go ahead. I am more into mind muscle connection and learning to isolate the muscle properly in order to stimulate it. The rest is food and anabolics given a decent genetic shape.

Same.

I do lunges and bulgarian split squats with a DB now...works just as good. That's it for quads on one of my twice monthly quad workouts.

Also, I can front squat with almost no tension on the back, but that's probably just how I'm put together. So I do front squats once per month too on the other day.

I train hamstrings like a demon though...2x/week. Your hammies can never be too big, or too strong, in my opinion. Strong hammies relieve a lot of tension from the lower back and knees (both of mine are worse for wear). And I think they look neat.

I'm too cowardly to post a pic, so this is my only contribution to a thread where real people post.  ;D

Compared to yours, yes, they are stellar .. I won the genetic lottery for lower half while you are another average gym rat who placed 5th in a local contest 19 years ago.. nuff said  ;)
