it's the context that makes it funny and not just that he mispelled a word

I've seen some video of him playing basketball in a pickup game.

In all fairness to Quayle, there are many parts of the English speaking word where we see a variety of acceptable ways to either spell or pronounce words. I believe the British frequently put an "e" at the end of words like tomato & potato, so Quayle's faux pas really was a non-starter. A giant mountain made out of a mole ant hill.

Even two English speaking countries like US & Canada spell the same words differently.

US - gray         Canada - grey
US - neighbor    Canada - neighbour
US - harbor       Canada - harbour
US - center       Canada - centre
US - definite      Canada - definate
