this is the part that baffles me.

We are supposed to believe that at any given second, the govts of the USA, china, russia, etc, aren't tracking every single one of the thousands of aircraft in the skies (even if not in realtime, but recording what is happening)?

I don't buy it.  Even if it is thousands of flights at once, surely our radar is watching.  I'm thinking even if they turn off transponder, someone is watching a plane saying "Hey, what's this guy up to", or there's some software to say "flight XYZ is in an area where planes don't usually go".

I mean, if SIRI can tell me where to find 20 escorts within 5 miles from my house, surely someone has invented something to set off alarms if a big ass airplane is where it shouldn't be?  ???

i can tell you dont / have probably never worked for a big, "high-tech" company

the whole "big brother intelligence network" thing that some people believe in... lol, just lol, is all i can say.

You mean how the NSA has said that many tech companies knew that the NSA was collecting data aka spying on US citizens, but these companies were denying it (with a wink and a nudge, nudge).

From the Pilot Network (liberty posted link recently):

Quote
Inmarsat saying they have used Doppler effect to isolate the southern corridor and tested the theory on known flights. Hence their latest conclusion. Can only give a general location.

(Inmarsat is the company responsible for the transfer of the satellite data involved)

I cannot think of a more horrible, torturous way to die.  I think about it every time I get on a flight.

At least the victims families have closure now.

The Airline sent a text message to notify the families.

The Prime Minister's statement came after the airline sent a text message to relatives saying it "deeply regrets that we have to assume beyond any reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and that none of those onboard survived."
Reporters could hear wailing from a briefing for relatives of missing passengers in Beijing. Some relatives were wheeled from the conference room on stretchers, and one group of relatives smashed the lens of a reporter's camera. A woman walked out of a briefing for relatives near Kuala Lumpur crying.

well, no bodies, no black box, no plane wreckage...but it's known for certain...I don't really see the closure, yet.

Yes many of the experts and detectives here on getbig think it's all a conspiracy and the plane has landed somewhere.

I don't know, and of course those were theories...but, the prime ministers is certain that it landed in the Indian Ocean off of Perth....
But, you have no plane, no bodies, no black box---but you know for certain? If someone is certain then they better produce some evidence of said "certainty".

Co-Worker: "Hey Bob, you're going to get fired today!"

Bob: "Wha...how do you know?"

Co-Worker: "Uh, I don't know, but I am certain that you are going to get fired today."

Bob: "So you are certain? How do you know?"

Co-Worker: "Uh, yeah...fairly certain, I overheard someone from HR saying someone from our office was going to get fired, so I thought of the one who most likely would get fired is you."

The plane is at the bottom of the ocean like I have said. They have the evidence just going through the protocols

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went down in the southern Indian Ocean, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said Monday, citing a new analysis of satellite data by a British satellite company and accident investigators.

A relative of a missing passenger briefed by the airline in Beijing said, "They have told us all lives are lost."

While the announcement appeared to end hopes of finding survivors more than two weeks after the flight vanished, it left many key questions unanswered, including what went wrong aboard the Beijing-bound airliner and the location of its wreckage in the deep, wild waters of the Indian Ocean.

If the information is correct (and beyond the literally incredible length of time involved to get to this point), the only place it could have landed would have been someplace in the southern arc, which lessens the chance that any landing occurred.

The idea is that landing on an island would simply be too improbable, and therefore the PM's declaration "beyond any reasonable doubt".

He's probably allowed some insurance concerns to move forward, too, with the announcement.
