It would be VERY difficult to hear somebody crying through a hotel room door/wall.

The "listener" would have to have their ear pressed tightly against the wall in order to hear crying.

Now if the room occupant/hotel guest had a family death, and they were sobbing, that would be believable. A random passer-by in the hallway might hear something.

But in any other case; "the listener" would have to be leaning against the door or the wall.
