Well, I think that's basically what Americans did in Georgia in 2008.
No way any lunatic in the world would have launched a full scale attack on Russian peacekeepers without a "backing" from US. Too bad for them poor Georgians, Americans were caught their pants down when Russia was ready and marched straight in.

Situation developed pretty much the same way; Initially everyone blamed Russia for aggression. These days EU has admitted it was the Georgian regime who escalated it by launching an attack.

Doubt that this is about starting WW3 though. Every rational person knows US and Russia can't fight in a war on opposing sides, EU is (unfortunately) a joke militarily speaking and definitely not even willing to fight Russia. I guess this more about trying to isolate Russia. USA can't do this alone as they have practically no business with Russia. They need Europe to be pissed off Russia too. EU has strong economic ties with Russia and only way to turn them against each others is by sparking Russian military operations close to EU.
