What happened at Elm Guest House?
We don't know too many precise details. The guest house was raided by police in 1982 and its owners, Haroon and Carol Kasir, were subsequently convicted of running a brothel. The property was later turned into flats.
According to the Independent, pornography involving adults having sex with children was allegedly shot at the guest house and then circulated commercially.
The newspaper also claimed that visitors to the property included the late Liberal MP Cyril Smith, the former Russian spy Sir Anthony Blunt, a Sinn Fein politician, a Labour MP, and several Conservative politicians.
What exactly has gone missing?
A total of 114 files relating to allegations of historical child abuse by senior politicians.
The documents related to a 20-year period from 1979 to 1999.
Mark Sedwill, senior civil servant at the Home Office, says the documents are "presumed destroyed, missing or not found".
Who is believed to be named on the documents?
According to the Daily Telegraph, the main dossier is rumoured to implicate household names, including more than 10 current and former politicians. MPs or peers from all three main parties are apparently on the list. Some, like Cyril Smith and Sir Peter Morrison, are no longer alive but others are reportedly still active in parliament.
