Perry calls National Guard border deployment open-ended

BASTROP — Gov. Rick Perry said Wednesday that sending National Guard troops to the Texas-Mexico border will defend not just his home state but the entire nation from “narco-terrorists” and that he doesn’t know how long they will have to be deployed before the threat is quelled.

The Republican’s possible 2016 White House aspirations got a boost nationally last month when he ordered 1,000 National Guard troops to the border. Perry traveled to Camp Swift Army National Guard Training Center 30 miles outside Austin for a firsthand look at the training they are getting for deployment — while perhaps hoping to look presidential.

“You now are the tip of the spear protecting Americans from these cartels,” Perry told hundreds of troops in camouflage. “As they are able to get past you they could be headed to any city, any neighborhood in this country, spreading their tentacles of crime, of fear.”

Perry noted that crime committed by people in the U.S. illegally had affected not only Texas, but Iowa, South Carolina and North Carolina, all of which he’s visited recently and two of which hold early presidential voting contests.

waiting for the photo ops that:
1. show the guardsman pointing his rifle at a 6 year old and forcing him to turn around
2. then later on, changing the diaper of some infant.

LOL, apparently they are given no ammo and this is an 'observation' mission. They're allowed to call border patrol to come and arrest the bad people but otherwise, hand out water and maps to our new guests.

Can't have them hurting any of the Chamber Of Commerce's cheap labor.

Perry is such a f-cking douche and this is a horrific waste of money, I can't seriously believe people are ra-raing this nonsense

Hey technically they're 'armed'

they're also not allowed to interact with any illegals, just call the police or BP

so they're a multi-million dollar CCTV network

what a horrible use of these brave men and women.   He's running for president tho, i get it.  I just dislike him using our troops for stage props like this.  That's all they are in this case.

To his credit, depending on how you look at it...

Obama was letting the illegals die.  In the desert.  No help.  You walk into the desert to sneak in, we let you die.  PERRY called him heartless and said their deaths was on obama's hands.

THEN, when republicans got on his case, Perry went to the border with a machine gun holding troops, and said "Only Perry can keep the border safe, he knows how!"

Now, he's trying to play BOTH SIDES of the fence.  He wants to hate on obama for letting illegals die on their journey.  But he also wants to act like he's trying to stop their illegal entry.   Sucks that some people will fall for it.

Instead of GUARDING the border, Perry is using the nat'l guard for humanitarian purposes.  So he can pose with machine guns for the ignorant ass base vote, and pose with sick babies he rescued in the general election.  Makes sense, huh?

Id like to know if that is really true, if the guard guys cannot do anything but 'observe'and hand out water...and if they are really handing out maps. That sounds almost too ridiculous to be true

I keep reading that only the president can authorize the issuance of live ammo to Guardsmen on the border.

Is this true?   Also there are republicans in the house concerned about the use of nat'l guard.  They were not requested by the tX police force or border patrol?  Rather, Perry decided on his own to send them as a symbolic move?

If one of them gets a stubbed toe, injured in a car accident, or God forbid, killed by an illegal... people are really going to ask "WHY WERE THEY EVEN HERE?"

They're a political prop being used by Perry to appear both tough and sensitive at the same time.  At a cost of 1.3 mil a week.

The ammo is one thing but i was asking about the handing out of maps.

And i dont think they would be a liability like you suggest; people will not be asking why they are there...if anything the american people want MORE security there.

To clarify - Perry doesn't want to stop the influx.  He wants to stop the CRIME that comes with it.

http://www.abc15.com/news/national/key-questions-about-rick-perrys-border-plan

They give water, food, medical care and maps to those who arrive "in squalor".  His words.
If the nat'l guard sees "criminals", they call the border patrol who then try to deal with them.

It's a humanitarian effort, not a border control issue.  He doesn't want to stop illegal immigration - he wants to make it safer for illegals.

When he says "I know how to protect our border" - Be very clear - He means he knows how to protect it from people committing crimes right then - dudes with backpacks full of coke or something.  NOT ILLEGALS.  In other words, you can arrive and stay, we'll feed you and hook you up with directions and a burger, just don't break the law in the 24 hours it takes us to feed/release you.  After that, well, that's someone else's problem?

That article uses the standard false narrative about 'children/unnaccompanied minors' when every photo shows adults, moms, grown men covered in tattoos...and it says nothing about 'handing out maps'.
