It's because Jeter's the odd player who is admired and respected throughout the league by players, managers, and fans, is a first ballot Hall of Famer,  spent his entire career with one team had many high profile successes and signature plays, and never had any real scandal.  Similar to Mariano Rivera, who got the same treatment.

Don't concern yourself about it too much.  You're a Toronto fan, so you won't ever have to worry about having a player like that.
Yup. Agree. Was at the last (Sunday) game. DJ got a 5-minute standing O, and even shed a few tears. Pretty cool. He was also the last out in a Jays' 4-3 win, so that was cool, too. Great day to be a baseball fan.

the Yanks DHed him on Sunday ... but did you notice that in last Friday and Saturday's games the Jays got 4 extra baserunners on groundballs to short that 90% of the shortstops in the league can make the play on but that Jeter couldn't ...?

in the past (in his prime) it'd only be one extra baserunner a game for the opponents on a play that Jeter couldn't make ... but what's he still doing out there for a team that thinks it's still in contention?  :-\

They know deep down that they are not in contention.

Derek Jeter the only baseball player with Hall of fame hopes that during his best years never was the biggest star on his own team .

The guys play cricket, which is far more masculine.

maybe household names like Bernie Williams and Jorge Posada should've been feted by baseball since they both have a higher career OPS and played better defence than Jeter?

Jeter never was the best SS, in his own league as guys like Omar  Vizquel were much better than him...

Hell Jeter wasn't even the best SS in his own team as ARod while playing 3rd was already a gold globe winner short stop and younger than Jeter!  he switched to 3rd base so Jeter could have a place in the team.

Both excellent players too.  Might never see a class of players stay together their whole career like those guys did.

it's funny to hear the sheep buying into the Myth of Derek Jeter.

yes, Jeter deserves to be a first ballot hall of famer for his 3000+ hits and his rings ...
but Jeter is basically Craig Biggio-plus, as he was fortunate to play on stacked teams in the biggest media market ... (whereas Biggio is still trying to scratch 'n claw his way into the hall of fame.)

great career consistency by Jeter but he only led his position in WAR one time during his 20 years.

It's actually funnier to see you melt over the accolades, respect, and admiration he's getting.  I'll bet you bought into thinking Josh Johnson, RA Dickey and Reyes would make you win the East.

But, as I'm SURE you know, WAR has its limitations when used for a single season, due to the UZR fluxes  ::)

Fans who understand the game like Chimps get it.  Jeter transcends the game.

he deserves respect.  but the Jeterfication of baseball is just a tad over-the-top tho ...

epic admission of not being able to back shit up haha.

oh yeah, all those intelligent fans who embarrassingly voted him to start in the all star game year after year (when he was way past his prime) lol

I can back anything and everything up numbers wise.  You want to talk fangraphs, BR, UZR, WAR, WoBA, fine - go google your brains out.

But these accolades aren't about pure data.  They're about what the fans have created around a player they love and respect.

The all star game is a joke. It's purposely made for the fans, and will always be a popularity contest.  Sure, Jeter didn't deserve to be there on numbers, but what did he do whe he got there?  Showed range like we haven't seen on the first play of the game and doubled in his first at bat.  Gave the fans what they wanted to see.  It's what he's done his whole career.

hence, the myth of Derek Jeter.

(that's fine, whatever makes fans feel better.)

It's not a myth though.  His career backs it up in terms of numbers, longevity, personal highlights, championship rings, overall team success, lack of scandal, and amount of grade A snatch he's hammered.

Black Ink   Batting - 10 (241), Average HOFer ≈ 27
Gray Ink   Batting - 145 (99), Average HOFer ≈ 144
Hall of Fame Monitor   Batting - 337 (11), Likely HOFer ≈ 100
Hall of Fame Standards   Batting - 67 (19), Average HOFer ≈ 50
JAWS   Shortstop (12th), 71.9 career WAR/42.2 7yr-peak WAR/57.1 JAWS
Average HOF SS (out of 21) = 66.7 career WAR/42.8 7yr-peak WAR/54.7 JAWS

He falls short on the black ink since he's not a power hitter, but all other metrics support him........especially James' HoFM
