Tell-all memoirs can be tough when they actually, well, tell all. But it would be hard to surpass the shot that Leon Panetta, President Obama’ s former CIA director and secretary of defense, takes at his former boss and the White House foreign policy team in his new book: “Worthy Fights.”

A book excerpt in Time Magazine Thursday recounts the internal battles over the timing of the withdrawal of U.S troops from Iraq and whether a residual force would remain. Panetta and other Pentagon officials argued for keeping that force.

“My fear, as I voiced to the President and others,” Panetta writes, “was that if the country split apart or slid back into the violence that we’d seen in the years immediately following the U.S. invasion, it could become a new haven for terrorists to plot attacks against the U.S.” He adds that his stance “reflected not just my views but also those of the military commanders in the region and the Joint Chiefs.”

Then, particularly damaging as the nation struggles with the Islamic State and a destabilized region, Panetta suggests Obama’s team put political promises before good foreign policy.

“But the President’s team at the White House pushed back, ” he recalls, “and the differences occasionally became heated. [Undersecretary of Defense Michele] Flournoy argued our case, and those on our side viewed the White House as so eager to rid itself of Iraq that it was willing to withdraw rather than lock in arrangements that would preserve our influence and interests.”

The White House, Panetta writes, “coordinated the negotiations but never led them. . . but without the President’s active advocacy, al-Maliki was allowed to slip away.”

And Obama had such nice things to say about Panetta at his Pentagon farewell ceremony last year.

Krauthammer on ISIS: "Obama Seems To Want To Contain The Situation Until The End Of His Term And Then Hand It Off"

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: If it was only [Leon] Panetta, and he's trying to sell a book, you could write it off. The problem is that it's been said also by Bob Gates, who was an honorable Secretary of Defense. And also in a muted way by Hillary Clinton who said, 'don't do stupid stuff is not a doctrine for foreign policy.'

There was agreement among the top advisers of Obama himself, his top notch security advisers, that he was indecisive, that he let opportunities pass, the most important one of course is the one that Obama disputes, and that is the abandonment of Iraq, the withdrawal of all our troops, when the military and all the advisors, including two Democrats and one Republican, his highest advisors were telling him to leave behind a residual force so that we could influence the government in Iraq as we had before and to prevent the sectarianism which led to the renewal of the civil war, and the renewal of involving us again. That was all predictable.

So this a way of his advisers saying he made the wrong choices at a time when we were at a crucial crossroads and he has been afraid. I think what we're seeing now with his inability and unwillingness to help in the fight in Kobani, to a very critical fight where ISIS now has the upper hand, Obama seems to want to contain the situation until the end of his term and then hand it off.

"contain the situation" meaning don't do anything to stop ISIS, but make sure you aren't outed as a supporter.

HIt and run comment....

Again Bush and his team were in negotiations before the end of his term. They got to around 25K with the sticking point being the wording of the status of forces. Maliki could not sell that number so they proposed about 10 K....That would be atleast 1 heavy brigade combat team...aviation and SOF. Obama came in and said no...3K. 3K can barely protect themselves and gets nothing accomplished. He also wanted US troops free from prosecution.  Maliki knew 3k was worthless and was certainly not going to commit the political capital necessary to sell 3k to his folks. Plus Iran wanted the US out. If  Barry had said 10-15K...more cash etc...we'd still be there. Barry fucked this up so he could say we ended the war in 2011. Good job barry.

PANETTA: OBAMA HAS GIVEN UP
Breitbart.com ^  | 10/07/2014

Posted on ‎10‎/‎7‎/‎2014‎ ‎2‎:‎59‎:‎33‎ ‎PM by Beave Meister

Tuesday on MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports," former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta declared President Barack Obama's approach to be like a law professor, however without the aspect of rolling up his sleeves and to get the job done.

Instead he suggested Obama has given up. Panetta said, "He [Obama] approaches things like a law professor in presenting a logic of his position. There is nothing wrong with that. We want to have a president who thinks through the issues. My experience in Washington is that logic alone doesn't work. Once you lay out a position, you are going to roll up your sleeves and you have to fight to get it done. That is key in Washington. In order for presidents to succeed, they cannot just -- when they run into problems, step back and give up."

"There is a feeling and I have a feeling that the leadership and the president have given up on the big issues facing this country whether it's immigration or a budget deal or infrastructure funding or trade or energy. there is a sense that you can't deal with that. This country needs that. They can't give up."

like this is predictable.  They always attack an unpopular outgoing president 2 months before christmas.

And while they were considered shitbag, lying worthless, scandalous libs in their time in office... since they toss in 2 paragraphs of anti-Obama ramble, suddenly you have FOX pundits pimping their book LOL.

Happens on the other side of the aisle too - at the end of the Bush era, it was the same thing... Repubs shitting on bush in their book, MSNBC with a big boner pushing that neocon's book for them lol, and libs slurping it up.

Even if Iraq renewed the contract, how much taxpayer money should be spent occupying a shithole of a country.  They didn't want our help after the contract ended (that Bush signed) so we have to leave....otherwise we're a bunch of Nazis.... ::)

How much are we spending now genius......a lot more then just staying put...further we now keep a BDE combat team in Kuwait. That BDE could have been kept in Iraq at Balad or elsewhere...same money or cheaper. Cheaper as the Kuwaiti's charge us through the nose for everything. Obama fucked it up...you..as usual have zero understanding of how any of this works.
