It's no so much the weight, it's the form he used.  I've seen guys tear pecs warming up with 135.  On the same note, I've never seen a bodybuilder look as good, no mater what he does after a pec tear.  Too bad for Vic.  This could be the end of His O hopes.
Levrone looked better after his

Kev stated this in FLEX.  I think I have the issue around here somewhere. If not, I'm sure someone else does.  The exact quote was something like "Levrone tore his pec doing pre-warmup deep flyes with 60 lb DBs, remarkably light for him".
I do remember that it was something like that. A lot of muscle tears happen with lighter weight. Years ago Vince Taylor tore his bicep doing SUPER light curls and a guy at my gym tore a pec doing 225 inclines(really light for him, he was huge.) I think it's because you tend to get careless with the lighter weight and when you combine that with a lot of A.S....POP

Injuries can happen with heavy, light and no weight in the gym.   I've dislocated my knee racking a 50lb dumbbell .....freak accident.   I've dislocated my shoulder twice in the gym....once shoulder pressing 300 lbs on the Smith and a second time db pressing 100lbs in mid-warmup.....the injuries happened 3 years apart.  I injured my low back on the 14th rep of 500lbs on hack squats (will never forget that set) and then I reinjured my lower back a year later warming up with 225lbs on bb rows on the 12th rep.   I once felt a pop in my right bicep while hammer curling only 30 lbs, and another time I felt a lesser pop in the same bicep curling 90lb dbs.   I severely strained my left pec decline pressing 430 lbs on the Smith on my 4th rep and another time I hurt my right pec pressing 185lbs on flat bench at about my 18th rep.......no rhyme or reason for any of it.   Goes to show that heavy, light and no weight can all cause injury.

I know what you're saying, Man of Steel. I tore my pec on the 35th rep of 500 lb on bench presses. I also dislocated my shoulder doing barbell military presses with 700. Muscle tears can happen to anyone.

Some folks might consider that a limited range of motion; hence, a universal plane with which the weight moves doesn't necessarily fit everyone perfectly.

This is bad. A pec tear ain't no joke. I just wish Vic can come back from it and have a career. All the best.

I wonder if some of those tears, the ones related to warmups, are avoidable and related to insufficient or poorly executed warmups. Sounds like what happened with Lavrone.

As far as getting injured later in a workout while going heavy, any suggestions? I think keeping the reps moderate, never below around 8, helps, as does avoidance of any exercise that causes "bad" stress to the body.

I can tell you right now if any muscle tore it can NOT be repaired, only if the tendon tears you can get it fixed by putting what they call a hanger on the bone and reattaching the tendon to the shoulder area. The bigger the muscle the weaker the tendon gets by stealing all the nutrients from the tendon leaving it as weak as a 60 year old mans tendon. Roids are usually the culprit.

I wish I knew.....I was in the middle of a normal set and in lowest part of the rep I felt something in my low spine shift slightly to the left and it felt like lightning shot through me and I didn't walk for 3 days.  It wasn't the amount of weight....that was warmup weight I'd normally and easily grind out 15 reps with.   There is a degenerative spine condition on my father's side of the family.....he suffers from it and two of his brothers (my uncles) do as well.....apparently I suffer from it also.   It won't ever go away unless medical science finds a way to cure it.  So you can say that it wasn't completely weight, execution of the exercise, etc....that caused the injury.....it was primarily genetics in that case I suppose.

Well, some guys compete with muscle tears. It will just have a cleft or a dent on the outside of his pec.

Seems like some of the injuries happen during warmup, might be avoidable. Warmups can be boring, it's easy to go through the motions and cause something to happen.

Oh without a doubt, some of my injuries occurred when I was young, stupid, ego-driven and inexperienced.   My current training regimen (at least the warm-up portion) in no way resembles my past "warm-up".   Some folks are lucky.  I see guys walk into the gym cold, load a bar with 225 and crank it out for 8 reps, then increase weight over a couple sets and never get injured.   I'm not one of the lucky ones.

Yes.. it's true. Big Victor has a pec tear and from what I understand it could be serious but only Vic himself knows. It happened while performing 400lbs Bench Press and from the looks of that weight, I would say that it could be pretty damn serious. All the best to him and a speedy recovery. He'll be floating around the expo from what I hear, so you'll get to question him then.
