I was there last week with my son who is 12. We were out walking at night and found the protesters, first surrounding police HQ, wanting an explanation as to why a protester got beat up by cops the night before.
Then we walked to the main protest, which was very well organised with a stage and 2 big screens. The protesters were mostly students, hippie types as you would expect. They were very insistent on telling any westerners what the protest was about, asking us to tell the world.
I got the impression that the local business owners and residents had been originally OK with the protest but were now really sick of it and wanted the city to go back to normal. I guess taking 3 times longer to cross the city or get to work is going to wear thin with anyone.
