you putting on any noticeable amount of muscle on your legs or you feel you need to train that much just to maintain what you got?

I'll have to say it's more maintaining what size I have, however I am seeing definite gains in separation and hardness.   Functional strength seems to be on the upswing too.   Size?  Not really.

i train legs smart and not worry about poundages,at my age i dont want any old injuries sidelining me for afew months from trying to be mr strong guy

So you end up with 4 45lbers on each side or you keep it stagnant at one 45 after first set?

I keep adding a plate. The highest I usually go is four to five on each side.

One work set fronts
One work set back
Hammer leg press for volume
Hams, calfs

Everything slow, paused, absolute full ROM, anything to prevent even a hint of ego training

Do calves and hams the day after delts. Do quads by themselves 3 days later, the day after bis and tris.

Typically 10-12 sets for calves, 8-10 sets for hams, and at least 12-15 sets for quads.

Quad day is my favorite: squats, machine squats, leg presses, and hacks. Fast and heavy, usually done in less than an hour. Have squatted 500 for 3 ass to the grass, but rarely go that heavy anymore.

The squat rack may be the worst thing ever to happen to bodybuilders who invariably load it up with too much weight and mess up their backs and knees.

Guys would be better off if they had to get the weight onto their backs from the ground.

I'm not that old but squating isn't practical for me anymore. 

Dumbbell lunges do the trick for me.  I couple them with stiff leg dead lifts and I'm good to go.

I do more proportinately on leg extensions- adding up to 170 lbs to tje stack on the Nautilus leg extension- than I do on squats. Not really safe or wise to go much higher on those, but I need one really heavy movement fort quads to grow. High reps and sets just make me tired.

You do squats. 
That's more than most who go to the gym.

Do you use any supplements for your joints.?
I had a huge problem with my knees & elbows
Years ago, I take glucosamine & chondroitin at
Approx 2/3 the label recommend dosage.
Took about 3/6mnths to work fully.
And then zero joint problems.

Did these in the last week or so - legs were equally sore despite very different set / rep scheme:

Workout one
10 circuits non stop:
10 pullup
10 jumping jacks
20 squat
20 lunge

2 mile walk with 44 pound pack at 14:27 pace

5 circuit non stop:
10 pullup
20 squat
20 kettle bell swing
20 lunge

1 mile walk with 44 pound pack at 13:35 pace


Workout 2
Box squats - 10 sets, 2 reps, 1 min between stets.  Start @ 75% Max, add 5 lbs each set.
5 mile run

what s the point of destroying your legs anyways... i only do seated legcurls to stay aehstetic and proportionned with my uper body but the whole huge weights big wheels thing just doesnt make sense.

why?you can have big legs and good upper body and still be aesthetic/ideal for your proportions.strong/big legs is great for core and upper body..

I agree and also my knees feel better when I work them hard along with blasting calves.

To each their own, but I've always been bewildered by those who train their upper bodies hard and heavy, spend a fortune on food, sups, even gear, etc - yet do nothing for the lower half of their bodies and walk around with arms as big as their legs.  ???
