I bet Howards wife is a cougar when Howard is not around.

Kid Rock would happily open fire and Prince Al Howard wouldn't have to submit to another divorce.

beautiful, majestic creature. never realised they were quite so big.

better if he was shooting pitbulls, tbh. they've caused more fatalities than mountain cats and he'd be doing us all a favour.

This sounds like a LittleJ post.

Now, here are some questions. Was the cougar a nuisance? Did it need to be killed? And what is the point of killing a predator that helps keep a check on prey species like rabbits, deer, etc? The only excuse is "it may attack livestock". Which is not really an excuse.

Or is a need to feed some deep insecurities?

This.

Killing a creature like this minding its own in the wilderness for bragging rights is lame.

I come from a hunting community. I used to hunt dove, quail, ducks etc as a kid so I'm not against hunting.. But.... to call feeding deer all year long then waiting in a blind for them to come to the deer feeder for food, and shooting them with a hi powered rifle from 30 yards is NOT hunting.. we need to come up with a better word.. like ambushing.

Harvesting? If they are for food, who cares as long as it's humane? We don't mount guns on cows and turn them loose in the stock houses, we push them into guillotines.

Yes that mountain cucumber would have grown twice as large, but it's in a salad now.

The point is the kill isn't even being consumed as food which makes the whole pursuit even more pointless.

Clearly this was lost on you.

I'm not a hunter but what do you all suggest? These animals have killed and eaten children. They go into towns and kill dogs. Just let the population grow and grow?

Yes, they attack folks, And I believe usually from behind, as they are ambush predators. So, that should tell you something about the people that get killed.

There was one woman who was killed, she was jogging, and if I remember correctly, she had headphones on.

There is a delicate balance that must be maintained. Predators like mountain lions, if they attack humans, should be captured and moved. If you can find the individual one, kill it, don't kill all of them. If anything, they are looking for a food source, and humans and dogs/cats are quite easy prey.
They wouldn't be preying on us or our domesticated animals if they had a viable source of food. So, you have to figure out what have we done to their food source. And of course our ever encroaching into their territories as well.

Humans are invading and continue to invade on their land. What are the cougars supposed to do? Set up shop somewhere else? Maybe they can rent a duplex apartment like the Three Little Pigs. Every time we encroach upon their land, we open ourselves to being attacked.

Why do you think many people who go in the ocean and get attacked by sharks say the same thing, "i dont blame the shark. we were in its waters." The ocean was not meant for surfing and splashing around. it was meant to sustain ocean life. If you go in the ocean to surf or play around, and you get bit, that is on you. I didn't tell anyone to go into the sharks territory.

So, my suggestion may be for humans to stop encroaching on land where they don't belong. When does it become enough? As humans, we need to draw the line somewhere. Maybe we should build a few skyscrapers in the middle of the jungle, then when we are attacked by a leopard we can say to ourselves, "I wonder why i was attacked."  ::)

I know it's not Grammy awards material, but I see music as food; sometimes I want a burger or a pizza, instead of another plate of chicken/rice/veggies..

That's why they gave him a permit to kill one. Keeping the population under control allows them to stick to their normal food source. When their population growns beyond their food supply they come into human contact.

I don't see the thrill of hunting. My white coworkers at my old job look at me strange when I told them I don't hunt. Am I missing out on something?   ???

I am white and do not hunt. Do not see the point in it. I think its a lot of men who want to try to appear badass. They probably think it impresses people.  ::) ::)

Yes, most likely, especially the ones that post pictures on their facebook holding up a dead deer. Yes, real men. Post those dead kills on facebook.  ::) ::) What tools.

There is a big difference between our ancestors who hunted and respected the kill, as oppose to these dingbats who try to appear badass to their friends on social media. Pathetic.
