Since this thread is supposed to be about Directv, I must say I've had it for years without much of an issue.  Never had a snow problem and only occasionally lightening disrupts the signal momentarily.  Before HD, it was mounted on the side of the house, high and out of view.  They had to mount the HD dish on the roof, which I wasn't crazy about, but it hasn't been an issue.

I never had any issues with Direct TV either..service was good...better than cable....mines was mounted on the roof as well

The best company I ever had was u verse. Currently on TWC becuase they offer 300 mbps. Can't wait for Google fiber to get in to my area.
