Hey Guys

Please excuse a newbie here but just wanted to say, I've been watching this thread for the last few months, and even though I'm probably a bit young (at 35 i hope lol...) - you guys really are an inspiration.

Jay - my heart goes out to your situation, Donny, as ex MoD myself, I really enjoy your posts too.

Everyone else who's contributed here - keep it up.

We all come on here for a laugh of course - via the G&O board, but this thread keeps things real.

Salute

I am officially on holiday from the gym. After saying I was going today, I did not. I hope I make it tomorrow. As I said to my wife this evening over dinner, I feel like I am losing some of the balance in my life. My whole day is focused on making it to the gym. Sad to say that after only 5+ weeks I feel like I need a breather.

My fucking knee is acting up again (not that it was ever really better). The pain just drains me. I have put off going to the doctor to see what the heck is really going on with it, preferring instead to try and fix it with exercise. Well, I am waving the white flag now. I need to know what is going on and how or if I can fix it. Who knows. my daughter may be right that I have a torn meniscus. If that is the case, I'll be eating some humble pie.

Is this part of being mature. It doesn't feel like mature behavior to me.

Steve,

You guys and booty are the best! You really are my inspiration to keep on keeping on. Trust me, I am not done and I know all to well that I carry the flame for you into the future. The last thing I want to do is let you down. I am just keeping it real, I hope.

Damn it Steve you set the bar high. I am gonna have quads like yours before my time is over.

Here is the thing, I don't know how to cheat. This little diary for me is all about keeping it honest. I will never post up a routine I did not complete. I have let myself down for two days now, by letting life interfere with my goals of being the oldest  fucking guy in great shape I can be. When I was a kid these little setbacks meant nothing. These days when time seems short they mean allot.

As for my troublesome knee which is clearly sapping my energy, I alternated putting a heat pad on it and using the TENS. At this moment if feels pretty good....not those shots of pain coursing through my knee and down my leg that I was having earlier today when I saw myself as a total cripple.

I am taking this setback day by day. I will hit the gym tomorrow. I am not giving up. Thank you so much for your support. All of you are such an inspiration me, just how much you may never know. And then there is that promised photo of me at twelve weeks looking all that and more.

You might have to see an orthopedic surgeon that specializes only in knees. Don't see an ortho guy that says he's a jack of all trades regarding surgery. He just might say due to age, use and bad genes you need to have it replaced. If that's the case I bet in a few months after the operation you will be pain free. That's the worse case scenario. Maybe anti inflammatory drugs or a minor knee operation could do the trick. Either way if you're living in pain for a long time you have to do something. It will effect your mood and the quality of life. Don't let it get to a point where it's too painful to walk a block.

So worse case you might be able to only walk for legs. Walking is a underrated exercise. A runner can get a good workout just walking fast on an incline. A bright side is that you now can devote your time to upper body.

If after you get your knee fixed it works but you don't want to tempt faith with heavy weight you can just train with light weights. I really believe that you can train your legs with 100lbs in the squat and get a good workout if you rep out. That's what Steve Reeves did for legs when he was stationed over seas during World War II. Hell, Wilf Sylvester won a light weight Mr. Universe title only doing 400 reps with using no weight, only body weight free squats and using a leg extension/leg curl machine. In life you have to do what you have to do. Again with modern orthopedic science you don't have to live month in and month out with pain.

All good advice. I have thought of all these possibilities. This knee thing has been going on for sometime now. It is time for me to stop dinking around and have the doctor look at it. I am not one to jump into surgery before trying other things if they're are any. I have no side to side slop or movement which is a good sign I am told.

As for picking a doctor, my wife has had both her knees replaced. The doctor she used for the second one was excellent. He is an orthopedist for several of the Blazers. And do those big guys have there share of knee problems!

As you probably know, maturity is not necessarily about age; it is about one's state of mind as well. 35 is young physically, no doubt you are a mature person emotionally and intellectually.

Don't just watch, feel free to contribute as well.

Today was cardio day. I strained my calf running so I walked fast on the board walk looking at the beautiful ocean. It hurt to see all the runners go by. I wish I was one of them. So many hot looking women wearing bikinis or very skimpy clothing walking around. It made the walk very enjoyable.

I saw one runner blow past me. I talked to him when he was doing his cool down walk. He said he did his last mile of a 5 mile run in 4:45. I believe him. Just incredible. We exchanged calf injury stories. He lifted my spirits by saying, "You look built. What do you do for a living?"

I entered a 5K road race scheduled for tomorrow months ago. I know I can't run on this calf but my nephew is driving 90 miles to run it with me. I think I'm just going to hobble through it and hope I don't completely fuck it up. I can run about a mile before the pain stops me. Maybe I can limp in the whole 5K. It just pisses me off that my 39 year old nephew is going to think I'm old and can't keep up. I just can stand injuries. They come so easily to me now.

Okay folks, don't split a gut laughing, but I made it to the gym today and I worked of all things legs.

Saturday - quads and calves

Weight 208

Nautilus leg extensions: 6X20 - 8 @ 105 to 155 lbs.
Standing calf raises: 5X20 - 15 @ 180 to 260
Hammer leg press: 5X25 - 12 @ 200 to 600 added weight
Leg press calf raises: 5X20 - 12 @ 300 to 300
Hammer hack squat: 4X12 -8 @ machine weight to 180 (didn't go deep at 180 because of knee)
Seated Calf raises: 3X15 - 10 @ 70 to 135

Last Wednesday I worked back

Weight 206

Front lat pull-down: 6X15 - 6 @ 130 to 260
ISO row: 4X12 - 6 @ 120 to 150
Nebula low row: 3X12 - 8 @ 140 to 180
Reverse grip pull-down: 3X12 - 8 @ 130 to 160
Nautilus rowing back: 3X16 -10 @ 70 to 110

Light one leg, leg extensions: 4X20 - 12 @ 58

I owe you all and my wife a big thank you. You have been both sympathetic and encouraging these past couple of days. My wife said to me on my way out the door when I told her I was going to the gym, "good....have a good workout" now that's a supportive wife.

well no Training today but i will go for a short fast run tonight in the Woods... just me alone with my thoughts. There is a bench half way round and i will stop there and do some Roman chair old School sit ups...some Areas here have a so called "trim dig" some Basic exercises you can do.. shame i do not have that here. Remember when i was stationed in Herford Germany(about 2 hours from where i live now) we had great "Trim dig" Areas. was a hilly area and was grueling at times because we did Log runs up there. Combat PT.. was a real Bastard at times. The troop Staff Sgt was ex SAS Signals and was a character. I met a couple of SAS Signals on courses too and they were all very cool laid back guys. None of this drill and thrill bullshit. Good solid guys. The Troop Staffy took us for his Little runs... still sweat thinking about it....lol. I remember me and another guy getting into Trouble on a course aThend the OC who was a Major wanted to send me and my friend to 5 Airborne as a punishment. I was fit then and think i would have passed it and my friend went and passed. He said....my friend is OC there at 5 and i told him i have 2 Radio OPS for you. I said no i want to go back to Germany to an armoured Regiment. Anyway a run in the Woods is what i need ;D
