I think he was trying to say he was Jesus ::).....and it's 'all of God's children"

Children are all either sons or daughters.

It would make no sense for him to imply to be Jesus.

Was he "on" to something, or a nut, or just missunderstood?

Discuss.

The fact that his HIT routine is being widely used with people seeing results says that he was onto something.

Okay...but Is it being used the way HE was teaching it?? I'll bet my last dollar that there isn't ONE person on this board who will believe that they'll get a big back or chest doing 2 or 3 movements - 2 sets a piece ...and then getting out of the gym in 20 minutes. I've heard Mentzer's tapes and that's what he was trying to teach.

I've tried it .....never got a pump...never grew......it just didn't work for me.

A member here called figgs did it basically to the book and grew, but his strength weakened. So he didn't get the results HE wanted, but I would call that successful.

Great for him....but you know the old deal....what works for one person may not work for another.

True. Nothing's 100% guaranteed. I'm sure you could make up a program in 5 seconds and send it off to 5 people, and at least 1 will report results. Just saying that Mentzer's did work for him and others seem to like it alot.

the problem with MM's whole style of training is not that it was wrong.  it's that other peope-no offense to anyone-couldn't pull it off on a consistant enough basis to see gains.  It's awful hard to wrap your mind around going in there and totally destroying a muscle in 1 or 2 sets and walking out.  You might think you did it but chances are you didn't do it or take it as far as Mike would have had you do it.  It's like when people read the leg training routine that viator did at the colorado experiment and say "that doesn't look that hard"...they just don't get it.

Was Viator natural at some point? I could have sworn reading something about it.

he didnt compete for several years in the 70s....he competed in the early 70s...then didnt compete for several years..then he came back again in the late 70s and early 80s. viator was a big fan of quaalude, rumour says.

Oh...I totally agree. Hey...it worked for Yates! But see, the interesting thing with Yates is that he did 3-4 "warm" up sets and then one working -  and he a called HIT.

To me, that's not HIT.

In the one pic I saw of him on the magazine cover at the time, he did look natural. But I guess it's obvious he wasn't. Just haven't seen many pics of him competing.

That might have been when the magazine shot was taken. It was him outside in the 'bush' of sorts and hitting a front double bi tensing his abs.

His philosophies I found were backwards, forwards, upside down, inside out consistent and very difficult to refute.  I do not have the education to refute his principles and I would consider myself pretty educated.  Mentzer was a very smart man.  He was a follower of Ayn Rand's objectivism philosophy which I also find incredibly difficult to refute.  The 1980 Mr. Olympia ruined Mentzer.  He fell into a life of stress and drugs and never came out of it.  :-\

not true. mentzer wasnt as smart as he thought he was. he over complicated bodybuilding. he twisted his own mind into knots.

he was an intelligent guy in many ways tho. he liked philosophy but he was mentally flawed and turned to drugs. a weak physche combined with drugs led to mentzers weird behaviour in the mid and late 80s.

also the mr olympia loss in 1980 shouldnt affect a normal person to such a degree as it did. of course he lost his bodybuilding magazine in 84 i think..which sent him over the edge,

he was mentally flawed from childhood.

HIT is shit. some say it works, of course it does as you are stimulating muscle fibers but..there are way better methods.
