Hernia?
« on: June 30, 2015, 11:40:28 AM »
Hey guys!  Just found out that I have a small inguinal hernia.  No pain at all.  Of course the Doctor told me not to lift weights until I see a surgeon, but that could be months.  Has anyone had this problem and did you still workout with it?

Yes I had an inguinal hernia...from the time I noticed it to the time I got it repaired was about 8 months. I continued to work out with it, and it probably got a bit bigger in that time....but didn't really have any pain except for a dull ache occasionally.
My friend has been waiting for over a year to have his repaired and he says his has grown quite a bit in that time.

I would say continue to train, but try to avoid exercises that put a lot of internal pressure in your midsection, like leg press or bent over rows.

Ok.  That's good to know.  Are you happy you've had the surgery or would it have been better not to get the surgery and just worked around it?

Why does it take months to get fixed? If I called my doctor on this I bet I would be on the operating table in a week.

Yeah you can only work around it for so long.....eventually it will just keep getting bigger.

I had a double inguinal hernia. Hernia on right and left side. Had surgery within 1-2 weeks. I didn't train for at least a year! I could have went back sooner, but was nervous it would pop  back out. I knew a guy who had 4 hernias. The issue with him is that he never lets it properly heal and begins to lift heavy asap. Because of my past hernias, I don't squat or deadlift any more.

Maybe take it easy and go for the "health" look for a bit.

No. Overall, my doctor did not think I needed a mesh.

It's been over 10 years and no problem. Though I still get a slight pain down there some time.

If you don't get the surgery, there is a good chance you can die from a strangulated hernia. Surgery is not an option. It's required, if you don't want to die.

I wish I could say that I got a hernia lifting heavy in the gym.  It's actually a very embarrassing story.  A week ago my wife got me one of those "Squatty Potty" stools that's supposed to reduce your chances of getting a hernia while going to the bathroom.  Ironically...it gave me a hernia.  :(

In the past all inguinal hernias were repaired surgically.  Now, apparently, for small hernias surgeons take the "watch and wait" approach with them because the risk of complications is greater than the risk of strangulation.  But of course...I'm not a Doctor.

Well, I had my hernia not too long ago (10 years ago or so) and they did the repair. They obviously cant go away on their own, thus, in my opinion they can only get worse. But as you said, I am not doctor, so who knows.

What are the risks so great associated with hernia surgery when compared to a strangulated hernia? ??? ???

I had a mesh repair and get slight pain as well. Usually after I do really heavy leg press, or for some reason lying leg curls. It only started doing that in the last 5 months or so, and my surgery was 4 years ago. According to my doc, mesh repairs only have a 1% chance of recurrence.

All surgeries have risks infection, reaction to anesthetic, reoccurrence etc...  In theory all could be deadly too.  It all comes down to the numbers.  It sounds like you needed the surgery.  I realize that my condition will never get better but some small hernias don't progress. I hope I don't need surgery but I'll do what the surgeon advises.

Thank you for your feedback I found it very helpful.
