Why I have no problem charging every last dollar.  Most people do nothing all day long and expect a raise for it.

people in office jobs mostly do nothing behind their fucking computers. Even in call centers which is probably the most stressful office job, it s still way less stressing than any manual or  healthcare job. See this asshole, woman or dude whose sitting behind a desk all day? he s smarter than everyone else. (except if he s obese of course but you get the point). Just like the men who werent drafted in wars, the guys behind desks nowadays are those who will live the longest. When you re grown up, married/family man thats all that matter.

It's common, this weird pride in accomplishing as little as possible.  Learning nothing.  Improving at nothing.  Getting a little weaker every day.  Not for me, thank you.

I can't stand it... People obsessed with the abstract representation of their work.  'Hitting the numbers', validation through 'metrics', writing up little summaries of one's accomplishments for management...

I focus on creating something useful.  Work I can learn from.  I struggle every day, trying to find a way to spend my time growing within the confines of my 'job description', but it's hard...

There is a certain joy in working as a volunteer as opposed to working for money. Not that money is bad, but having to earn a living can make work seem like a drudge. How often do you hear of someone turning a hobby into a way to earn a living and they end up not liking the hobby anymore. I feel fortunate to be free to work doing just what I want to do as a volunteer.

worked in IT for 6 years webdesigner/content manager and other bullshit titles -basically laughing all day with collegues surfing playing games and "working"  like two or three hours  a day-, got bored of office work, thought i wanted a" more meaningful" role and career...got into studies/health and social work... oh boy what a mistake. It was way less stressing to displace files , create some bullshit graphics , "code" websites and answer fucking emails all day. Sure it can get repetitive and boring, you want to smash your computer/mouse but are you really sure you want more stress? Given the choice now, i would choose boredom over stress. I learned nothing really good about life attempting to care about people needs, mostly that some people are luckier than others and...thats all. Most of the time you cant do jack shit to help people, you re just sitting there telling them stuff they either cant comprehend or cant really do. All they want are money/free handouts. And i dont even blame them. I came to despise all the collegues -mostly women- i had because they were making fun of the people they were supposed to help more tha anything. Comparing themselves to those who have less to make themselves feel better about their own lives. It s rampant in all the system, i leared that most doctors hate mankind and their patients with a passion. No really, health and social working are definitely not for me, way too cynical.

I regret so fucking much leaving IT now, im  considering going back but it s tough. Seriously, stay sit in your fucking chair doing fuck all, there s no better place to spend the rest of your life. As you age the less stress you feel at work the better. Stress takes its toll way faster. Just my opinion. Stay healthy, practice sport, stay sit in a chair moving a mouse as a job and you ll live til you re 120. Isnt it what it s all about in the end, what truly matters, lasting longer than anyone else.

Great post and advice, I can affirm that being someone who works in it. And if you were curious about the field- just spend some time learning and will be able to get back into it in no time, not like many people have a brain for that and technologies are spreading way faster than its possible to make new specialists. Its obviously not about drinking coffee all day,far from that (sometimes i spend hoirs andbhours and hours trying to complete some task, only thing that helps is that I like the process most of the time and joy after completing is almost better than money), if you want to take it up a notch and earn decent money.

I don't care how long I last, and I certaintly wouldn't wanna live to a 100 anyways. Rather just die much younger and get it over with. I just want to live happily right here and right now with all the love, passion and success I can gather. For me, life is about working hard to achieve your dreams, enjoy what you do and yourself, and take care of the people you love. Nothing else matters.

thats because you re old , retired and it allows you to socialize, talk to people instead of staying at home behind tv 24/7. Old people would kill to still have some recognition and use in society. Young people on the other hand dont give a fuck they want/need money to survive, if they have to talk to people they prefer to be paid for it.

Good thoughts. You are probably young enough that 100 seems beyond ancient.

I am only 30 years away from being 100. I'm in almost perfect health. As long as my health (both physical and mental) are good, it doesn't matter how long I live. The longer the better. However, if I become debilitated to the point where I now longer enjoy life, then I'd prefer to die. It should be so easy. We die when we die. It is largely out of our control.

Work to achieve your dreams by all means, but remember to enjoy life along the way. I dream of having a beautiful garden. I'm willing to work to get it, by work I mean actually working in the garden. I don't need more money than I already have to fulfill this dream.

We don't need to "kill" to achieve recognition or value in society. All one needs to do is get involved. The nice part of this is many of us don't need to earn more money, which definitely frees up more time to be involved in other meaningful ways besides just to earn a living.

I advise young folks to work their asses off to make enough income to allow for saving and investing part of it for retirement. Believe me, no one is living the life of Riley on just Social Security Benefits. Many folks want everything right now. Saving for the future just isn't in their agenda, which is really too bad because no one is going to bale them out when they are too old or too feeble to work.

If but that were true. Unfortunately it makes no difference whether you do or don't have children, you are still going to grow old and eventually die. My daughter, her husband and son share a house together with me. When my wife was ill, having them here to help was an enormous benefit. As I get older and move a little slower, them helping by doing chores, cooking meals and contributing in many other ways make all of our lives richer and better, especially mine.

It can be a lot of fun to want/dream about something. Often once you get it though, you are disappointed or throw it aside for something else you want. I believe this is why, if your basic needs are met, wanting good relationships with those you love should be fulfilling enough.

Who cares what happens?  The world will spin without you or me and eventually that won't spin any more either.  The best we can do, anyone can do, is make it more enjoyable for ourselves and others while we are here.  Since we already know the ending, may as well make the time in between at least somewhat pleasant somehow.

the rich man will always trouble the poor. Just like the weak monkey will always be harassed by the alpha monkeys. When you re a kid everything sounds fun until you re an adult and realize it s all about killing instead of being killed; all the "games" you "played" were just training for the real fight once grown up. Games serve only one purpose in all animal species: train to kill for when you ll be on your own.
Some are better prepared for it than others, and history is written by the winners.
Pleasure is felt when killing, dominating, pain is felt when losing, being dominated.

problem is to be happy, you ve got to step on someone else's head and actually face his/her pain to feel "luckier" and "happier" then him/her.  One 's pleasure, hapiness, is always at the expense of someone's else pleasure, that s just the way it is. A winner needs losers to actually feel like a winner, otherwise he wouldnt feel like one. Nature isnt designed to be fair, all lifeforms exploit each others to "make a living" , survive.
Also most people who pretend to be happy because they ' re "helping" others are actually fooling themselves; they re in fact exploiting others weaknesses to make a living. Their ultimate goal cant be to completely cure their customers/patients problems; otherwise they wouldnt have a job anymore. They need a steady stream of "unlucky" people to "take care" of. Most social work is lucky people exploiting poorer, unlucky people. Irony is the rich need poor people to exploit and make a living while the poor constantly wish to become as strong as their masters to.. join and/or replace them.
There s a reason why so called "human resources" exist, it s because the weak is a resource for the strong. In all animals species, the luckiest, strongest, fastest individuals exploit, prey, on the weaker individuals and use them as slaves/resources.

And yeah, everything is vain for whoever understands the true nature of existence.

Well said - although there's also happiness that comes from within from just doing what you like doing. It's the intent that counts and most folks are, as you correctly stated, lying to themselves and others...

His posts are very good usualy. Tho' I'd wish him to find some time for a more positive outlook, would be healthy. Who knows, maybe he's the most positive guy you'd meet in a real life, it's just that he uses this form of a "vent" (and you need one if you are smart/conscious of how life works) to let out the negative point of view.
