The cop was fired.  Violated all sorts of rules by sneaking into the building alone, without backup or telling the other officers.

The chief said he's letting the criminal justice system play out before announcing any charges.

Sounds like dude wouldn't get on the ground so the not-even-a-rookie-yet cop wanted to play hero, got scared and opened fire.  There's a reason they have all sorts of non-lethal weapons and work in groups.  You don't just shoot holes in everyone that doesn't listen to you - you use non lethal means, and you arrest, send to prison.

The officer had plenty of options from a Taser to even a good ass beating from a baton.  Even worse, he ignored his senior training officer's instructions which would have prevented this from happening.

Exactly. Cop went for the most lethal option. And didn't wait for backup.
Had he did what he was supposed to do, the kid would have been arrested, booked come down off of his high, bail or release, and a court date set.
