what makes him a good actor and his 'looks'is he can be a geek or clean cut made movie'handsome'or just a regular dad kinda guy who is good looking.
Yes he is in the classical side of the scale. Colin Farrel and say Josh Brolin are too I'd say.
Masculine and timeless looks with no need to sport beards and stuff to hide a weak ground site. Look at James Franco, he has that classic James Dean look but softer and boyish. But that is his era.
All big moviestars before this era had geniune good looks, look at my avatar - the great Sir Peck. Look at Connery, Stewart, Olivier.. burt Reynolds. Clint. Marlon.
It was in the late 70s and 80 the hero become an "anti-hero", portrayed by More intellectual, forgive me but "nerdy" actors. Yes this is including Bobby, Al, Dustin, Dreyfuss, Walken, Cruise, Keaton.. Pesci. And look at Danny DeVito who would ever think to have him lead a movie like "other peoples money"?
This is why Arnold was extra off beat when he came, but he did it with will. In actuality he was too masculine.
Then from then on a large procentage of male ideal/leading men has been more boyish and feminized like Depp, Jared Leto, Pitt and now Gosling. Look at DiCaprio even.
So it has changed, but I sense that masculine is on rebound right now.
(No homo!!!!)
