Anyone Ever Left a Job Before You Finished Your Duties?
« on: March 10, 2016, 08:58:39 PM »
Got a job offer from a really good company paying a ton more than I make now but I sort of have some unsaid obligations (sort of based on honor) to stay at my current company until I finish the project I'm working on now. I really need to take this other job though, like it's THAT good. Would I get shit on if I left my current job and abandoned the project?

I would give my boss a heads up and say I will work my ass off till such and such date but then I gotta take this new opportunity.

Unless you genuinely feel respect and fondness for your current boss/bosses, tell them you're outta there and to suck a cancerous cock.

Generally, if the shoe was on the other foot, you'd get a swift boot up your arse.

Only give loyalty to those who've earned it.

Just had to do the same thing a month or so ago. I gave 4 weeks notice and moved heaven and earth to finish or to put my projects on a good course. It took me about 3.5 weeks, so I timed it just about right.

Give them an opportunity to match the offer... it basically gives them a heads up and let's them play ball rather than you just walking out.

Sometimes they will tell you just to leave right away but sometimes they'll want you to help the new person IF they trust you will.

Most importantly, get the written offer before you fuck yourself over from any job.

Give them two weeks notice (or whatever is standard in your industry) and then leave.  Your only loyalty is to yourself.  If it suited the company, they would can you with zero notice.

Tell your current company to match the offer, or you are out the door.

Bay and others are right. 2 weeks notice and out.

Offering a chance to match the offer is your choice. I'm guessing any flexibility to increase pay  would depend upon the contract and other factors. The employer might feel you're holding a gun to their heads.

Don't be brained washed.  Companies will give you the guilt trip but trust me if they need to lay you off they would do It mid project.  Don't forget this is a two way street.

No ultimatums with the current employer.  I would however tell the new employer that you have some commitments you would like to see through and ask if they could accommodate that with your start date.  They'd probably respect that.  A couple of weeks later in the start date likely will not make a difference in the overall scheme of things.

Nick,

Congratulations on the offer.

Would you "need" to take the job if your current company offered you the same salary/pay?  If so, then do the "honorable" thing to do is to give them 2 weeks (or maybe longer if the new company will agree to it) and bust your ass to finish what you can.  If not, then give your current company the opportunity to match the offer and make your decision to leave or stay based on their decision.

Good luck,

Parker Boy
If it is to be.

Why wait for an offer match?  Obviously if he's interested in this new job that he probably doesn't want to stay in his current role.  Time to leave

The are niceties that can happen (as _aj_, PL, and Fortress mentioned), but ultimately this is true.  Do what's best for you and your family.

I left a good paying job for a better one. I left on good terms and praised rightfully so for all the training they gave me. While on the new job that had a 6 month basic training that had a high failure rate I received a letter. The old job said in the letter if I want to come back they would welcome me back.  It was a great stress reliever having that letter.

Now finish your duties and flush.

Give appropriate notice. Offer to work on a contract basis. Perhaps you do things after hours and get paid from both places until your project is finished.

I've done it a few times.

I used to work this small company were they fired their biller for stealing money. The company was ignorance enough to let people stick their own apple ids on company iPhones. So this loser lock out the iphone before giving it back, wiped his computer, and refused to give back the keys to a company car before moving of out the city. What a fucktard.   :-\

It's based entirely on the assumption one would prefer their current job over another. If you don't like your job, why even ask a question?
