That lower B&W photo looks like one of those "death" photographs from the 19th century. Having photos taken was expensive back then and often the only time a photo was taken of a loved one was when they died. The deceased would be propped up and posed as if still alive and family members would have their photo taken with them. In this case it looks like the mother had died.
