It's statistically impossible for most to achieve their dreams.  Actor, pro ball player, world touring musician.  Yes, it's possible...but very doubtful.  Anyone can chime that on the top, what about all the getbiggers?  You'd never hear a foolish quote like that.  After all, most are concerned with Synthol, posing thongs, and who's on sauce.

It's acting. In the sphere of impressive artistic talents, it's bottom of the barrel. There are more people who can act well then those who cannot. We constantly see rappers, kids, washed-up pop stars, etc. enter into the TV/movie world, starring opposite "genius thespians" like Pacino, DeNiro and the like, doing just fine.

Years in drama classes and stage productions, hundreds of films to the resume, and Joe Blow who has two pop smashes jumps into some big movie and performs every bit as well. The director had pulled him aside for 15 minutes before principle shooting and they had a chat.

I would agree to a big extent Fortress for cameos, but more in depth roles...say Johnny Depp roles...a hack would be a disaster.  Acting is deceptive.  Most people aren't convincing in acting roles...great actors make it look easy, like a great guitarist.
Main difference, no actor is doing a Yngwie piece for a cameo on a G3 tour.  "Let's get Pacino up here."

Also, even simple lines would be a wreck with the majority of society trying them.  Some are just terrible at being natural on camera.  Basic roles though aren't too difficult, I agree.

For example, in the Scent of a Woman, Al Pacino played a blind person. Russel Crowe played a schizophrenic person in a Beautiful Mind. In my Left Foot, Day Lewis played someone with cerebral palsy. To pull off the mannerism, body language and tone, etc, of someone with an impairment/disability, is EXTREMELY tough. The Rock would never be able to do so. I think you're undervaluing just how hard acting is, especially those roles like the ones described above.

Yes action movie gap. Cmon now, most of those people are comedians and will always be type cast as such. Can you really picture Jack Black or Steve Carell in the Fast and Furious or GI Joe movies...

The thing is with the rock he or his agent has been clever enough to shoe horn him into big franchises like the fast and furious. His solo movies don't do that well like snitch, Hercules,  san andreas etc but he adds something to the ensemble films or as a co-lead. Not like back in the day when people would turn out to see a movie led by arnold, sly, cruise, Willis etc. It's a different ball game today, as an individual star, a solo draw he's not in any of the guys league I mentioned.
