Do you think that with the popularity of social media that great inventions will decrease?  Some of those minds that are out there with ideas that can change the world are preoccupied with getting Likes and such?

Yes...I do believe this will occur to a degree.

semantics, Macs, iPhones and androids are unix derivatives
All Linus Torvalds did was just made the kernel

The real hero is Richard Stallman and the GNU project.

I would think the real hero would be Dennis Ritchie & Ken Thompson - the inventors of Unix.

It would be pointless to list the other contributions these two giant minds have made, however you can rest assured that almost all modern computing owes heavily to these two folks and AT&T labs in general. Their Wiki's are fascinating.

Just to keep things clear for anyone who is just looking around the thread.

Linux is a completely different kernel than the Unix variants.

It was started from scratch.

Now, the reality is that the command line syntax is often the same and while many applications have been produced by the open source communities for both, they are not the same.

Linux is the Terminator of operating systems; it keeps running, no matter what.

Also it doesn't phone home unless it is Ubuntu.

lol at "All Linus Torvalds did was just made the kernel"

is that all??  haha.
All the rest of UNIX  > kernel
Just because the kernel was the last missing piece at the time, doesn't make it anymore important then the rest

KDE today is a bloated piece of ressource-wasting and spying crap and full of bugs.
KDE3 hasn't been that bad though.

Anyway, not recommended.

Real Alpha's choose Xfce!!

Xfce is not bad but it also has some bugs regarding video output/gaming (low fps).
I have been a long time Xfce user but it's bugs made me switch to MATE.

 lol@gaming on linux

just one example,

With AMD graphics card you don't even need to think about it.
But Intel/NVIDIA works pretty good, often better than on the 10 Trojan.

Just because a couple of games that actually run on Linux achieve 5fps more when it's over 200fps on both anyway, doesn't take away Linux is shit for gaming, nothing fucking runs on it.I don't doubt Linux would achieve better fps than Windows on most games if developers saw a market for Linux gaming, but they don't.This could change with the steam machines etc but I doubt it.

Actually games run better on Linux since you have everything under control (open source) and can tweak, etc. to your liking.
On crapdows everything is under microshits control.

Using Intel/Nvidia under Linux and some tweaks every game I tried ran far better on Linux than on Windows.
At least this is my personal experience.

Not a gamer myself, but I enjoy the speed and functionality of Enlightenment. The only part that sucks is finding/adjusting certain settings with all those sub menus.

It’s not so much the technology behind Linux that’s fascinating – it’s what Linux has enabled in its 20 year lifespan. Linux has grown from a hobby OS that ran only on Intel-based 386 computers to powering everything from the smallest embedded devices to most of the world’s supercomputers. While Linux has largely failed to make a dent on the desktop, where Apple shines, it’s made amazing progress everywhere else.

If you’re reading this site, you’re using Linux indirectly. It’s no exaggeration to say that the Web as it is today would not exist if it weren’t for Linux. The rapid explosion of Web sites and Web businesses were made possible largely by Linux. Not because Linux was technically superior, but because it was freely available and open to modification. Many of the largest and most influential businesses of the last decade wouldn’t have been viable if it weren’t for Linux and the rest of the free software stack.

Use Facebook, Twitter, or Google? Again, all of those companies depend heavily on Linux. If you buy stuff from Amazon, bid on auctions on eBay, or watch a movie using Netflix streaming – you’re using Linux. Linux also powers control systems in nuclear submarines. It’s hard to imagine the rise of big data or cloud computing without Linux. Amazon Web Services? Linux. Rackspace Cloud? Linux. Google App Engine? You get the idea.

On the consumer side, life would look a lot different without Linux as well. If you use an Android phone, or a Kindle eBook reader, you’re using Linux. It also powers the Roku Internet TV devices. It’s also being used for In-Vehicle-Infotainment (IVI) systems, and countless other devices.

Five Ways Linux Impacts Our Daily Lives
by Ryan Matthew Pierson
[snip]

The Majority of the Web Runs on Linux
Linux (and Unix) platforms are currently powering the majority of the Web today. Because if the flexibility of operating systems such as Debian, Cent OS, and Gentoo, Linux has served as the backbone of the majority of the sites you browse on a daily basis. Network administrators love Linux because it can be customized to a network’s specific needs, and is capable of running single and multiple tasks without a lot of background processes clogging up the system. At one point, the ratio of Linux servers to Windows and OS X servers was 4:1. Recent studies have shown that Linux is currently backing between 60-70% of the world’s Web servers.

Linux, and various derivatives thereof, currently serve as a primary operating system for over 90% of the world’s 500 most powerful supercomputers.

Actually OpenGL smokes DirectX.

The problem is market share. Windows has the market share. That's all.

If people start buying desktop Linux and actually can use it as a group, game developers would make games for it.

Little known fact, starting this year, the servers running battlefield 1 will all be Linux.

They can host more people on Linux game servers than on Windows.

Only remember the OpenGL/DirectX "war" from back in the day when John Carmack in all of his muscle bound glory used the momentum of Quake to give OpenGL the spotlight. No idea how it is today... too much of an industry for me.

Bodybuilding related nugget - the Earl3D engine can render Kevin Levrones penis in all of its glory using the GlisteningHead(TM) API.  :o

He wasn't ignored by the true nerds.

The reality is that Steve Jobs impacted more people in a in your face way. Things like the iPod and the Mac were in your face. More important? Hell no!

Just more visible.
