YEP, Marty! Proper English and proper punctuation plus proper spelling is a sign of intelligence within this world in which we exist.

Plus you can save yourself $100 a month if you did your accounting yourself.  That will more than make up for the tax increase.

It ain't rocket science.

Why do you get upset when some good guys on this board are trying to help you out?

lol yeah becoming a tax pro i really wanna do that shit

In theory all painters will be passing on the same price increase so the playing field remains level.  In actuality all painters will have to do more work for cash and pay no tax since they will otherwise lose more jobs to cash competition.

The downside of working for cash can bite you when applying for SSI. If you chose to risk being charged with tax fraud by working for cash, at the least, you should put money away for the future.  Another thing, running your business like this could result in you losing your contractor's license. No body in their right mind is going to hire someone who does not have a contractor's license.

Yet thousands do everyday. Having a contractor's license doesn't mean they're actually insured and bonded.

No it doesn't because they could have dropped the coverage after getting a contractor's license. Never trust what someone claims, verify it. The thousands who do this have no one but themselves to blame should something go array.

For someone like a painter licensure is nonsense.  What's the worst that could happen?  There's a drip somewhere on a door frame?  Electrician I could see.  Plumber if there's sewer mains involved.  GCs.  Painting is the most faggy trade ever and anyone can do it.  I'm amazed people pay to have it done.  I paint (unlicensed!) on rare occasions and it's basically like a holiday.  The heaviest thing you lift all day is a tin of paint.  Decorators.  ::)  If a girl can do your job then it's not a trade.  When I'm painting I make a point of telling everyone I'm not a painter.  It's fucking shameful.

Giving money to the government so you can get a portion of it back later seems like a false economy to me.  Besides, there won't be any SSI for Marty's generation.  The best reason to pay tax is that it funds important things that keep the country running.  (In theory.)  I'm socialist enough to believe in taxation.  Whether it should be income tax or sales tax is debatable.  How well it gets spent is very questionable.

The real world contractor bottom line in the US is that you're not going to win a homeowner job over an untaxed uninsured Mexican and still afford groceries unless your costs of doing business mirror his.  19/20 people are going to take the half price Mexican without the contractor's licence quote.  If you're on the up & up all the time then you're competing with every other 100% legal painter for the remaining 20th job.  You'd be better off at McDonalds.

Ummmm, yeah, I'm gonna have to go ahead disagree with you on that.  Painters can have one of the most dangerous jobs possible.  A couple of years ago I got the exterior of my house painted.  There are sections on my roof line that are 30 plus feet up, and only accessible by laddering a 45 degree pitch.  When searching for companies, I found that less than 10% actually had proper medical and liability insurance.  Most would say they did, but when I would ask them to email a copy, they would back out, or say that they would pay for all medical expenses if something happens to one of their employees.

One of the reasons most companies don't have proper insurance is because of the extra cost.  The last thing I wanted was a worker falling 35 feet off my roof, and then his family suing the shit out of me.  The insured contractors were on average 500 to 1000 more than the uninsured, but it was worth it to me.

Men built that.  Then some fag with a brush came along and painted it.

thats a massive jump on taxes in on year on the workin man

for the dims who dont understand if i charge 100 $ to paint a room in 2016 , as of 2017 i will make 7.25$ less because of this state labor tax. or the tax gets passes onto whomever paying me

its funny we got more n more every year n the tax pool paying the same state rate , that should suffice right?
why would there be a need for a tax rate increase

great way at the state level to hurt middle class

If you remember , back in 2007 the economy crashed and some state/local governments were hurting.
Unlike the federal Gov, the state/local situations couldn't use a congressional approved "bail out" to cover most of it.

For example in Ga, we've had a rental property tax added at the individual county level.
My wife and I have a couple Mt vacation rentals, so this applies to us.
Like sales tax in a store most of us just add it on to the rental rate.

Then, we record it and let our accountant* figure it for taxes.
* my wife worked for a major bank and is good friends with our cpa

Everyone thinks they can paint which is not the same as saying anyone can provide a professional paint job. As part of a remodel I'm having done, the painters used a four step process to paint the custom kitchen cupboards. Can you, a self admitted non-professional, outline this process for me?

A lot more can happen than a errant paint drip. If the unlicensed painter you hire falls off his ladder and injures him or herself, you can be held liable. If the painter doesn't pay their suppliers or subcontractors (employees), you can be held liable. In some states, hiring unlicensed contractors is illegal an subject to you being fined. In Florida the fine is $5,000. What if it's not just a drip but a priceless rug that is ruined because the painter accidentally trips over a 5 gal bucket of paint? If the painter won't or can't pay the damages, your homeowner's insurance may not either, leaving you to cover the cost of replacing your rug.

If you are unlicensed and get caught working without a license, you can be fined $5,000 in Oregon. The fine might vary state by state.

Good points.

Once you've remodeled and hired contractors you quickly learn that the cheapest work isn't always the best path .

I'd never use anyone to cut down a big tree that wasn't licensed for Tree removal service.

Depends on the wood but I'd guess filling, sanding, tannin blocking primer, and finishes with air assisted airless or hvlp, buff between coats.  Odd the cabinet guys wouldn't provide a completely finished product and you have to hire painters however.  If you're gonna test me let's at least talk grain finish varnishes and oils.  You're gonna get shellacked brah!

A licence to work.  Or else the government fines you.  Think about that for a minute.

- Probably would get shellacked. I haven't been a professional painter since my mid-20's.  :D

You pretty much covered the cabinet painting procedure the painters used with the exception of the final clear coat. The painted finish was applied with an airless. If I remember correctly, the cabinets are constructed of Alder. The interiors are pre-finished maple.

The island is constructed of white oak. All the panels, drawer and door fronts are book matched. They are stained with a couple of Varathane top coats with a very low sheen. The island's finishes were brush applied.

Not a great photo. Kitchen in progress.

Looks good.  Enough I'll let you slide on having stainless appliances.  :D  But if you go brass or stainless cabinet handles I'll never forgive. Get some badass wrought iron cabinet handles.  The black will compliment the lights and island well.  Just $.02.

Ok I'll admit that sort of thing is a specialty.  Furniture/ cabinet grade work is another level than painting drywall and baseboards.  I'm sure there's all sorts of shit that you need to know.  I did a bit of lurking on a woodwork site and the discussions never ended those guys had about how various finishes succeeded or not on different kinds of wood.

I hope to build my own kitchen one day and feature my carpentry expertise with grain finish, but by the time I grind off all the bent nails hanging out of it I'll probably have to paint!

States should lower all taxes. More businesses invest locally. More businesses then employ more people. And more people have more money to spend.

MARTY, I'm not mad at all. It's impossible for me to get mad at good people on an internet board.

And the bad people ... I just avoid!

Most of the responses are GetBiggers doing their best to be helpful in an attempt to answer your original question which got off track a bit and lead to additional responses that even I (who does not paint anything outside of a coloring book) find to be of interest.

So llI gotta thank you initiating this topic.

Somewhat related story follows:

My brother-in-law is a jack of all trades. Climbs mountains and is building a one man submarine (he was a submariner in the US Navy) and is one of the top abalone divers in northern California during abalone season.

He is retired and has sufficient time to pursue these 'hobbies'.

Their home is a big, three story place  built in 1904 and is registered within the state as some form of  historical 'artifact'.

He recently received a number of bids from licensed painting contractors  .. Low bid at $18,000 and high bid at $22,000 pus a separate rental fee of $5,000 a month for  the scaffolding.

So he decided to paint the house himself and purchased  some scaffolding for $1,000 which will have to be taken down and  reconstructed as he proceeds to paint  which will cause him a lot of additional work but will save him $4,000 or more depending on the time it will take to paint the place. His paint estimate is $1,500.

Here's the test question for GetBiggers who like test questions:

If it would take two months for a pro to paint his house for a total of $20,000 plus two months of scaffolding rent, how much would he save by painting it himself?

PS ... He says that his color choice is "SUBMARINE GRAY". The present color is NAVY GREY.

I recommended OLIVE DRAB with a bit of camouflage thrown in.

But you civilians would not understand that.
