Spring Cleaning

March 24, 2004

Ah yes, Springtime is in bloom once again and while it is time to throw away old items that you no longer need, its also time to clean yourself up while you're at it.  Ok,  we already know about those so-called "New Year's Resolutions" in which on January 2, everyone dog-piles into the nearest gym and shells out a couple hundred dollars for a gym membership thinking that they are going to get in shape this year.  Unfortunately, the majority of people drop out on average after 3 days and the only weight they've lost is in their pockets.  But at least the gym owners are happy.  But you can still catch up in just a few weeks for summer by following these 4 important tips:

Raid your refrigerator and shelves and throw out any junk foods or unhealthy items such as potato chips, candy bars, butter, ice cream, birthday cakes...etc immediately.  You won't be tempted to cheat if there's nothing around to cheat with.  It doesn't matter if it says fat-free, if its junk food then get rid of it

Replace the items you threw out with more healthy choices such as fresh vegetable, fruits, and other items.  Purchase non-hydrogenated cooking sprays and choose more leaner sources of meat such as fish, chicken, and flank steak.  Don't be fooled by 80% fat free meats because its a play on words.  1 gram of protein is 4 calories yet 1 gram of fat is 9 calories.  So basically more than half of that so called "80% fat free meat" is FAT!!!

Even if you have a gym membership, if you can't get to the gym on a consistant basis then work-out at home.  You can either work out with or without equipment.  The most basic item available is the 110 pound barbell/dumbbell set which you can still find for 49.99 at most stores.  If you're not comfortable with that there are a number of high-quality home exercise systems such as our Total Trainer machines that we carry.

Finally, just simply do it.  The first few days is always the hardest but after you get into the routine it becomes second nature.  Not only that, you'll feel better, look better, and you'll have more confidence in yourself.

The road to success is hard but the rewards will carry you through those times.  If you follow these basic rules then you are on the right foot.  Next month, we'll discuss training routines and more nutritional tips.  Stay hungry for change!!!

Vince what is your opposition to buttter?

Why do you think people are keeping old birthday cakes, are there abnormal amounts of birthdays in the spring? I don't understand your reference.

Why focus on fats and not on sugars? Fats are good for us, even if they are high in calories processed  sugars aren't yet you don't mention them, why?

Butter is high in saturated fats...birthday cake was intended to inject some humor.

you are currently obese, Melvin, so why humiliate yourself by quoting this old diet advice?

I actually lost a lot of weight but actually due to medical problems.  I was training for an SNBF show in April when I found myself being very fatigued and I was dropping pounds too quickly for the time period.  I found out that I now have mild anemia so I have to take iron supplements.

That's why I always tell people to get a check-up regularly with your doctor and always get blood test.  Blood is essentially the motor oil of your body and it will let you know everything that's going on
