In reality Elephants are "culled" in some parks here anyway, once they reach a certain population level. They are very destructive when their numbers grow beyond a certain point, so esp. in droughts too many elephant can cause other animals to starve. so yearly a lot may get put down. In 2005 they culled 5000 elephants here in South Africa...

If a wealthy trophy hunter comes here from the USA and is willing to pay huge dollars for a legal trophy of an animal that was going to be culled by a ranger anyway..
May as well make Money from a tourist trophy hunter...some of which goes back into park/reserve conversation, wild life preservation and the local economy/community (guides, staff)

Regardless of your views on hunting or hunters...If legal and properly regulated, ironically, responsible and profit driven tourist hunting helps more than it hurts African wild life conservation and helps fund anti illegal poaching - which kills more endangered species like Rhino etc.
