Could you elaborate more on the meeting - he looks pretty imposing even on pictures... kinda like a smaller Ken Shamrock.
I would be happy if I sported a physique like that.

RONNIE REP, Based on the number and the names of the bodybuilders you've mentioned, I would make a guess that you are 50+ years young.

Paul Dillett, Robby Robinson, Flex Wheeler, Ronnie Coleman, Mike Mentzer, Phil Williams , Casey Viator, Ron Teufel ,Chris Dickerson, Mike Quinn, Mike Ashley, Chris Duffy, Dave Palumbo, Claude Grolux, Dexter Jackson, Jay Cutler, Ray Mentzer, Kevin levrone, Nasser El Sonbatty, Vladimir Senatus, Matt Mendenhall, Mike Christian.

If memory serves me right ... I think Teufel, Robinson, Dickerson, Viator, Mendenhall, and Christian go back further in bodybuilding history than each of the others.

And since you have seen, met, or talked to ... it's possible that you may have met but forgotten ... Bill Grant, Dave Johns, Andreas Cahling, Gary Leonard, John Corvello, Pat Ruell, Kent Kehn (spelling is wrong but most in the game knows whom I'm speaking about even though I can't spell is name correctly), Joe Nazario, Dave Rogers .... and a host of others who have yet to be mentioned under this topic.

You are correct Stunt. I am 61. I met most of them in S. FL. where I moved from Philly in 6/78. So many bbers wrestlers, etc came through the gyms I trained in. I also went to lots of contests in S. FL. all through the 80's into the 2000's. I have competed twice in the 80's. I forgot to mention the most impressive of all. Sergio. He guest posed at a contest before he competed in the Olympia in 85. Just had to be seen to be believed.

RONNIE, Thanks for responding!

Re. Sergio.... I first met Sergio when he first jumped ship from Cuba (if that story is correct). I knda/sorta recall that he somehow got to Chicago and started training at the Duncan YMCA which I honestly have not thought of since way back then (Memory is an amazing thing).

I aso kinda/sorta recall that he trained with or against Bob Gadja whom I think also trained at the Duncan Y.

And I kinda recall that he competed against Bob in some long forgotten contest in the Embassy Hotel Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles which I kinda think that Gary Daniels won... which is the story I wrote here long ago and got shit from a Daniels family member.

Sorry but you caused my memory bank to rev up a bit and my fingers started typing.

Back in them good old days a handful of us so called heavy lifters trained for "functional muscle" and referred to our good friends and fellow lifters who trained otherwise as ..... Bulky Blunders (respectably of course).

Bodybuilding was a bit odd to the vast majority of those who had never stepped inside a weight room until a few 'pioneers' convinced a small handful of others that it was otherwise ....  but it was a gradual process and took another 30 years to enlighten the unlightened masses.

And as is evident on this here GetBig Board  .... many of those masses  continue to believe that it is just as odd today as it was back then.

OPPS!!! soapbox! Sorry bout that.

The main question I had for you but almost forgot to mention ......

Do you recall a young competitor back when you competed who was a good looking kid with lots of bodybuilding promise who passed away for some unknown reason in his early 20's???

Peter Potter reminded me of his name a long while back but it was so long back ago that I have forgotten.

In my humble opinion I think that Nubret was the greatest of all time and I had the opportunity to have a serious conversation with him about the game more than once .

I think I wrote about that a long while back.

Good to hear that you left PA and are living in a better climate.

Thanks again for corresponding. Good to see another old-timer trying to teach these new pups old tricks.

RONNIe, I forgot to mention that I was once assigned to be an "ESCORT OFFICER" for Oliva while he was a special guest of Jeff Everson's during some expo held in some very cold city back east someplace.

He failed to show up at the expo on time and called to say that he was lost so I took off to find him and managed to do so and said, "Follow me!"

I used to say that lots so Sergio obliged and we commenced to walk  the 1/4 mile to the expo.

But during that 1/4 walk we had a lot of people to walk through and it seemed that all those other walkers recognized him from his competitive days and were obliged to shake his hand and hold their  youngest child for a photograph.

The fans soon grew to a hundred or so and we were having some difficulty getting to the expo and I thought that I'd have to call for "reinforcements" but a simple but loud plea, "Please let us go. He's gonna be late!" worked well enough.

They obliged and a few of them even led the way and prevented further delay.

Here is was about 30 years later and the Sergio  fans were still numerous and felt forced/obliged to express their 'gratitude' or whatever it is that rabid  fans do express.

I also watched as this same thing happened when Arnold showed up and I am still amazed that any bodybuilder, actor, sports figure, or politician  can gather that much attention.

Good stuff Stunt. I also forgot to mention, that the first gym I trained in S. FL. was Goldcoast Gym.
It was owned by Rafael Guerrero who also happened to be Sergio Oliva's Olympic weightlifting coach in Cuba.
He was also good friends with Peter Potter and they used to promote and of course judge contests together.
Rafael was also a gymnast/hand balancer and used to do all kinds of bodyweight strength moves in the gym.
He was the one who taught me how to pose, and worked with me on my routine and diet for my first contest.
Rafael was the best, he worked with every bodybuilder in the gym who competed in his contests.
He always got great guest posers for the shows, and also got bbers to do seminars in the gym.
That's how I met Mentzer, Viator, Teufel etc. He and Peter Potter were responsible for bringing Sergio to guest pose.

RONNIE, If you ever run into Peter .... ask him for the name of that young kid in Florida who had unlimited potential . I believe that he will remember.

Here's another topic that some GetBiggers  may be interested in .....

I guess you saw that Dwayne Johnson/ Mark Wahlberg movie called PAIN & GAIN which was based on a real Forida gym related story which actually occurred (burt possibly not as funny as the movie made it out to be) back about 19 years or so.

I had met the principal players and knew JOHN CARL MEESE pretty well back then .... a damn good guy as far as I was concerned but I don't know how accurately he was portrayed in that movie.

JOHN spent some time in prison and I have been told that he passed away while incarcerated.

Do you recall the actual details behind this story? It was interesting enough to make a pretty damn good movie but I've possibly ruined it for most GetBiggers within one paragraph.

But complaints are always welcome.

FIBO 2000 = Bill Kazmaier, 2 meter tall, +22 inch arm, legs like tree trunk, mountain traps, i remember him sitting on the background and eating a full plate of rice with 3 big sandwich.
Vince Taylor, super muscular, very friendly.
                   shawn Davis, huge arm.

FIBO 2002 = Nasser, fucking huge from every side, a neck like a rhino, also very polite and cool.
Flex, asshole, i didn't approch him.
Ronnie Coleman, not that big in clothe.
Marcus Ruhl, cartoonesque of course, but with a lou Ferrigno syndrome when it comes to take pics.
                    Dorian Yates, deflated version.

So the most impressive to me was Kaz, epitome of power.

Kazmaier was 6 ft 2 in height = 188 cm

(2 meter = nearly 6 ft 7)

I knew Mese also. I never liked him. He was arrogant and unfriendly. When i competed I approached the judges for constructive criticism. Everyone was great especially Peter and of course Rafael. Mese just turned away, and brushed me off. I also had another dealing with him unrelated to bbing. He had an accounting firm and I needed to talk to him re business , he was a complete asshole.
As far as the movie, I talked to people and read articles in the New Times about the whole thing.
It was fairly accurate from what I remember. Of course there was creative license used to embellish and sell tickets.
He die in prison from cancer, I even talked to Robby Robinson on Facebook about. He wasn't to fond of him either.
