Frank Zane had done quite well by 1972
« on: February 12, 2018, 08:17:06 AM »
I had been aware that Zane had purchased movie star Cary Grants home and ran his Zane Haven private training services out of it in the 80's and 90's. But I had no idea that he purchased Grants large estate in Palm Springs in 1972. Years prior to becoming Mr. Olympia. I guess Zane was a smart man with his money. Here is a link to a Palm Springs real estate site discussing the homes history and mid article discussing Zanes ownership of it. They are wrong about Zane only running Zane Haven for a decade though. What a house.

The article states that:

After Grant sold the house in 1972, it passed to bodybuilder Frank Zane, famous for defeating Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1968 Mr. Universe contest. Zane turned the property into a private health resort for about a decade.

The writer seems to be compressing time and mentioning "notables" that owned the property. There could have been interim owner/s between Grant and Zane.

Wikipedia:

In 1985, Frank and his wife Christine owned and operated "Zane Haven" in Palm Springs, California where they conducted one-on-one sessions with clients who wished to possess a symmetrical physique. Today, the Zanes live in San Diego, California, and his learning center is now called "Zane Experience".

Zane website:

In 1980, Frank and Christine opened Zane Haven in Palm Springs, a bodybuilding learning center where people could learn the bodybuilding lifestyle in weekend programs. By 1987 they had outgrown the Zane Haven facility and purchased the former Cary Grant estate in Old Palm Springs Movie Colony, moving from Santa Monica in the process.

It sounds like the Zanes bought the former Grant estate in 1987.

Thanks, Taffin. The tape over the names is from a photo of the cover of A Zane Way to a Beautiful Body although that could be accomplished with blending options in PS. The font is different but serif, although the exact same font could be found easily.

I very purposely, deliberately never spend over 5 minutes on an altered image posted from concept to final posting on Getbig.  For example, Kwon posted something related to Zane's wealth, a takeoff on A Zane Way to a Beautiful Body clicked in immediately, I searched for images on Grant, then drawing caricatures of Grant, then saw the N by NW photo, downloaded the original Zane cover and Grant images into PS, etc... All at a manic, crazy, very focused, short, time-restricted pace. It's kind of an exercise for me. Sometimes my posts don't make sense because the concept to final execution within 5 minutes is too limiting but it's just all an experiment to me anyway.

Something seems wrong with this story. I recall seeing a picture of Zane Haven where he lived and it was very modest. It sure didn't look like that mansion. His only employment that I can think of was being a school teacher back in the 70's.  Later in his career he sold books and equipment. Was his wife rich from family money?

Nice house. I really like the style of the old California estates. I wonder what Zane bought it for, in 2011, it was for sale at a hair under $3,000,000.

Also Zane seems to have sold it by the late 90's - https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/22/cary-grant-estate-in-palm_n_826274.html .

Price history for the last 20 years. If it wasn't really that badly in disrepair, someone did well for $720,000 back in 98.

More - http://www.redfin.com/CA/Palm-Springs/928-N-Avenida-Palmas-92262/home/5683791 .

Bought in 88' for a bit under $600,000, sold 10 years later for $720,000.

If by "german" you mean Jewish, then yes , he is......

Zane /ˈzeɪn/ is a name of  Semitic origin. Meaning "God's gracious gift". In English-speaking countries it is used as both a given name and surname.

It's hilarious to me that Getbiggers can't afford to buy UFC pay-per-views, but are all millionaires.  :D
