Don't get all the hate for Bourdain. I never found cooking or food shows interesting nor did
I like a travel shows but I love watching Bourdain's show. It was like you were on tour with him.
In just an hour I got see places, meeting and watching ordinary people and their cultures in a way
I will never get to do. Anthony had a very easy going way in which he would get people to open up about their culture, politics, religion and, of course, food and how it reflected on their culture and way of life. One of the ways that made them distinct.
And what is all this "he never did anything for anyone"? Really? How do you know? When someone is successful, and Anthony was, it doesn't just begin and end with him. To be successful means you have to provide a good or service that people actually want. Something that improves the quality of their lives. Think of all the jobs his show provided and in turn allowed people to support themselves and their family. And, judging by the response to his passing, his show provided entertainment, insight and education to people all around the world that they would not otherwise have. I was very interested in hearing the views of an average Palestinian family which humanized a group that I did not have a high opinion of. And it's not like his job was easy. He wasn't doing the typical upscale vacation of comfort, luxury and style. He visited some pretty harsh third world countries.
I'm sure we differed widely politically but I'm OK with that. There are things other than politics that being people together and he showed that. I can't get into a man's head so I don't know why he would kill himself. It's hard to imagine that anyone could live such a full and varied life.
