The term is so selectively applied that it has no meaning anymore. Blacks, Hispanics, and Muslims are way more racist, sexist and homophobic, on average, than white people yet are exempt from classification because the Left deems them oppressed.
Latinos are very xenophobic.
It's not considered a big deal cause we usually don't have hordes of immigrants getting into our countries, so xenophobic incidents happen in small numbers.
However, there are times when we face mass immigration. Right now, MILLIONS of Venezuelans have been scaping from the collapse of their country.
Do you know how they are treated in Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, etc? Women claim people treat them as prostitutes. Men are exploited, they are paid way less than the minimum wage.
Overall, our countries don't like immigrants. This is not so obvious cause we usually don't have the opportunity to show our true colors.
And at the same time, we will claim americans and europeans are xenophobic (we don't use the word racist that much, only lefties in the U.S. do).
So, the next time someone tells you you are racist for opposing immigration, tell them we are pretty much the same, perhaps even worse.
Also, the word they're looking for is xenophobic, not racist.
