I've seen a few 2016 Hellcats (Challengers) going for 53K+ with 11,000 miles or more....not bad at all..with these new wide body HellKats outhere, you'll get great deals on older models...

The issue with Hellcats besides the upfront cost for me is the 1.5 gal per mile at WOT, the high insurance cost, gas guzzler tax and it just has way more HP than I would ever use. I will never see a track, and would not race on the street due to the hazard it causes. I DO want some pep in the acceleration and I like the throaty sound of the V8 I rented. I considered the SCAT pack with the 6.4 and 480 + HP but again, I really think the R/T with the 385 HP would be just enough. I will post pics if I buy. I am undecided on Plum Crazy, Torred Red, or Black.

New cars are never a deal unless u enjoy burning money there are no advantages but thats great buyers advice above

Ok I will bite. That is a solid statement.. but NEVER a deal is not true anymore. With the high resale value of many models, Honda Accord for example, Toyota Camry, it would be difficult to find a deal on a used one that trumps the warranty and price on a new one. The difference is sometimes negligible.

Then you may already know this, but here you go:

Assuming you already know exactly what you want, year, model, trim, color, etc.:

1.  The best time to buy a brand new, current year model is at the end of September when the next year model is released.  The dealerships will lower the price on the current year model to get them off their lot and make room for the next year model.  So if you want to buy the 2019 model, the best time will be the end of September 2019, sooner if you notice the one that you want quickly flying off the lots.  Wait until near closing time that day, when they are ready to go home and more willing to make a deal so they can go home.

2. Before all that, around early August, sit at your desk at home and search online for 3 to 7 dealerships around you that have the car you want.  Because it's a new, current year model, this shouldn't be hard.  It's okay if the dealership is 100 miles away.  You're not necessarily going to buy from that particular one.  At this point, it doesn't matter if some of these don't have the exact color you want as color doesn't change the price.  Check their inventory online, bookmark the ones that have what you want, keep an eye on these often to see how fast they're selling out.  This is how you know whether to wait until the end of September or pull the trigger sooner.

3. Within a week or two before the time when you plan to close the deal, create a standard email telling these dealerships exactly what you want(minus color), that you won't be financing with the dealership, that there will be no trade in, asking for the "out the door price" which includes fees and taxes.  Include no personal information other than your zip code so they can calculate the tax.  Tell them you are getting bids from many dealerships via email and will buy from the one with the lowest "out the door price".  Don't agree to visit them, or to speak on the phone, or even to chat online.  Insist on an email quote only.

4. Get them to start a bidding war.  Don't bluff.  Take the lowest bid and send it to the others to see who will beat it, then repeat.

5. Eventually, they'll start slowing down and dropping off.  That's when you print the smallest bid, take it to your nearest, favorite dealership that has the car you want in the color you want, and negotiate the price down using the lowest quote you got via email.  This is a good time to ask for any dealership coupons/sales/promotions/rebates/clearance, then ask for coupons/sales/promotions/rebates/clearance from the manufacturer.  Some won't disclose these voluntarily.  You have to ask.

6. If there are more than one of the exact same car you want on the lot, tell them you want the one with the lowest number of miles on it.  They will lie to you and try to give you the one that has been test driven the most.  Politely request to go to the lot with them and verify with your own eyes which one has the lowest number of miles.  For anyone reading who might be surprised, no new car is zero miles no matter what they tell you.  They'll have anywhere from 5 to 25 miles on it.  Is this a big deal?  It could be.  Most new cars, depending on the model, shouldn't be accelerated too high too fast for the first 1,000 or so miles to prevent serious damage to the engine.  New brakes shouldn't be slammed on for the first 500 or so miles to prevent damage to the brakes.  What do some people who test drive these cars do?  They accelerate pedal to the metal and slam on the brakes, and the sales guy/gal doesn't say anything because he/she doesn't care.  The car test driven the least is less likely to have had this done to it, but there's no guarantee.

That's one of the advantages of buying a brand new, current year model when there are lots of them on the lot at many dealerships:  You can compare apples to apples and there is a lot more competition because they are all selling the exact same car.  Can't do this when buying a used car.  Other advantages are more emotional, like knowing you bought a "virgin" car and that you are the first owner.  You don't really know where a used care has been or whom it has been with.  Another advantage of buying a new car is potential for better durability...see above regarding acceleration and braking the first 500-1000 miles.

Some dealerships will even agree to ship the car to your house and even waive the shipping fee.  This is great if you decide to buy from a dealership far away.  You don't have to buy the car from the dealership nearest you.  You can take your new car to any dealership(of the same car manufacturer) for warranty work.  However, if the dealership you buy from offers your first oil change free, or you negotiate free oil changes the first year, you'll typically have to go to that very same dealership to get this benefit.

Some dealerships, usually in big cities, are in a program with American Express that allows you to pay the entire purchase price of the car using this credit card.  If you have the cash to pay off the credit card right after, you get all the credit card points or cash back benefits.  Many other dealerships will allow you to pay only a fraction of the purchase price with any credit card, $1K to $3K or so.

This may seem like a lot, but it's just high level information.  I suggest reading more helpful details here:

Disclosure:  Unless you are a Getbigger, I strongly believe people should buy only used cars because new cars depreciate so quickly.  Because all Getbiggers are debt free, have 3 to 12 months of expenses saved in an emergency fund, are already maxing out their 401K and Roth, and are either on target to financial independence early or are already there, then it's okay for Getbiggers to buy new cars if they want to, for the advantages over buying used that I mentioned above.

Other than changing the buying to late December, all those things are familiar and good advice, thanks

Late December is one of the best times to get a great deal on a used car, because it's the end of the month and the end of the year too.  When it comes to buying a brand new, current year model however, you'll have less options.  You may have a hard time finding exactly what you want.  And even if you do find it, you won't be able to get as many dealerships to compete and get in a bidding war over your business if they no longer have the exact car you are looking for.

There is however a small chance that you'll get what you want for a low price this late in the year.  Good luck!

Good points. If a person isn't picky December will work, I see your point about end of Sept for current year and best selection

If the Challenger is what you like and you can afford it, go for it. Life's too short to deny yourself these little pleasures. A slightly used or year end car is find as long as you get everything you want in the car. If you have to compromise, buy new when the selection is good or better still order exactly what you want.

I've always bought conservatively until I purchased the car I drive now.  This time the car feels like it was made specially for me...no compromises and no regrets. Most likely, I paid more than I could have if I'd bargained down the price. -Hate haggling to get the best deal.

I've heard that before from financially responsible people.  They just hate haggling, don't have the time or patience for it, and believe their time is worth more than the deal they would get otherwise.  In this case, they see paying more as paying a convenience fee for avoiding the hassle.

Nothing wrong with that if you are financially responsible and can easily afford it.

Everyone is different, and though some formulas might work the same for most, they won't work the same for all.

Complete waste of money to buy a new car. You can buy one for 8,000 usd several years from now. Or buy something similar (or better) this month for that amount.
And once you own it, the thrill will be gone.

Most people who do buy such things are lacking something in their lives.

Such a car apparently has to make up for the emptyness elsewhere.

Isn't everything you buy because you are lacking something? Does it occur to you that some people have money and that they enjoy muscle cars or luxury cars? How about jewelry or paintings? What about Stallone's million dollar watch? Is it because he is unfulfilled and empty?  Are Jay Leno or Kobe Bryant leading empty lives because they have a garage full of luxury cars? Is Pacquiao's private jet use to fill some void in his life? Could it be that maybe he doesn't like airports and can afford his own plane and improve the quality of his life? That it might be invigorating to be behind a wheel of a beautifully crafted, precision, and powerful, high-performance car?

When people spend money on something it is worth it to them. It is not a waste? They proved it with their dollars. Maybe to you it is but not to them. Sure maybe they will get bored with their Shelby Mustang and want a Lambo. I got bored with my couch and got a new one even though the original one served the same purpose just as well. What's wrong with that? My cousin just bought a new house even though the original one was fine. Like everyone who buys a new house, they feel really good about it. My sister felt great when she bought this new purse. So what? Let people do things that make them feel good.

If you won the recent Powerball you wouldn't buy things that you normally would buy, not because you need it, but because you want it?

I find that most people who say things as you do are more about sour grapes. Because you can't have what other's have you have to diminish its value to feel better about yourself.

“Complete waste of money to buy a new car”
Maybe for you it is.

So everything you buy is used / 2nd hand
And you only buy what is essential to live

You don’t buy or treat your children / loved ones / friends
As that’s a waste of $
No doubt you are a joy to be around

Are you that financially that broke or just a miserable person
You make it sound like your life is Empty.

I  own a 2014 Grabber Blue Mustang V6 Premium package with 32K miles. I was happy with it. My only add ons are the twin Shelby racing strips {Black} and the shelby spoiler., with a Predator performance tune. Recently I rented a Challenger V8 R/T and was impressed with the interior room, the power and the old school vibe. Thinking of the 396 version Scat in Plum Crazy purple. Anyone have any input on that?
I got my 2013 challenger rt classic brand new. It is jazz blue  with white stripes. I just hit 50k on her. No issues.  Fast enough.  Next year I will buy a Silverado and just keep the challenger in The garage. She will be my gran torino. For years people wanted me to upgrade, you will never keep up.  I invest, one toy car. That's it.  Do it smart, don't. Be a retard.

Everyone is different, and though some formulas might work the same for most, they won't work the same for all.

I tend to enjoy the haggling. I try to get the best deal possible or at least within reason. I understand the dealer needs to make a profit. when I lived in Austin I would contact about 5 dealers via internet. I would tell them exactly what I want. I would ask for their best price. Surprisingly, often times I would get their best price the first time. I could look at 5 different prices, eliminate the ridiculously high one(s) right of the bat and focus on 2 or 3 dealerships. I could usually get the best price that way. I wouldn't go into the dealership until I had it all lined up. If I was trading I would visit Carmax first and get an offer to use as a negotiating point.,
I have been known to pay a little more to the dealership that came in right off the bat with their lowest, even if another eventually beat them by 100 or 200. I like to reward that kind of stuff.

This go round I feel I messed up. I filled out a "Build your own" on the Dodge website and then sent it out in mass through the website to competing dealers only to be overwhelmed with emails and phone calls. So I am going to have to cull through the mess and focus on just a few of them as it can get complicated dealing with so many. Especially shopping used models as well.  The used part of it really adds a lot of complication because there are so many variables, miles, options, colors etc. New seems like a piece of cake now

You are right, there is no one size fits all in life. Many people consider haggling a game which they love to win. Some others like me prefer doing enough research to feel comfortable with their purchase.

A friend of mine loves old cars, iconic ones, muscle cars, and 70's "land yachts" which explains him having so many. A long cherished 65' Chevy Nova, mid 60's Chrysler Imperial and at onetime until I bought it from him in 85' for $1,500, an 83' Peugeot 505 STI. The previous owner blew up the engine and gave John the car.  He had never worked on a diesel engine. All I paid for were the parts. -Drove it for 9 years.
