Bill Weld launches campaign for 2020 as Republican

William F. Weld, the former Republican governor of Massachusetts, formally announced his candidacy for
president on Monday, becoming the first Republican to launch a primary challenge against President
Trump.

In a statement, Weld, 73, said “the voices of the American people are being ignored and our nation is suffering.”

“It is time to return to the principles of Lincoln — equality, dignity, and opportunity for all,” Weld said. “There is
no greater cause on earth than to preserve what truly makes America great. I am ready to lead that fight.”

Weld, who formed an exploratory committee in February, has accused Trump of praising authoritarian leaders,
humiliating allies, and railing against the rule of law. He has compared Trump’s immigration policies to Kristallnacht,
the 1938 Nazi rampage that destroyed Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues.

Trump's approval among Republicans is 80-90%.  This guy is selling something few will buy, so it's only about hurting Trump.
I predict Soros et al will anonymously create PACs to support Weld.

I agree with your first point – the Republicans do have a primary system.  The thing is he’s
not running in case Trump doesn’t; he’s running to unseat him.

History shows that primary challenges to incumbent Presidents wound them to the extent
that the other party wins:

Reagan against Ford in ‘76
Kennedy against Carter in ‘80
Buchanan against Bush in ‘92

This is not necessarily predictive of 2020, but I believe that Weld is all about Weld, with no
interest in keeping the Whitehouse Republican.
